Whittier offers curbside collection of electronics for residents, and the published program covers all electronics, including computer monitors, televisions, stereos, tablets, cell phones, laptops, fax machines, scanners, printers, keyboards and microwaves.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Whittier residents, through the City's on call bulky waste and e-waste program, which provides four free pickups a year of up to three items. Residential premises and multi-family premises are both covered.
When & how
Call Athens Services at (888) 336-6100 to arrange the electronics pickup. Electronic waste is also accepted at Los Angeles County household hazardous waste events and permanent collection centers.
Get it ready
Never place electronics in a trash or recycling cart, because Athens lists electronic waste among the materials that must stay out of containers and warns that doing so can interrupt service.
Carts out by 6 a.m., never before 6 p.m. the day before
All containers go out by 6:00 a.m. on the collection day and no sooner than 6:00 p.m. the day before, because the City's designated collection day is the 24-hour period from 6:00 p.m. the day before to 6:00 p.m. the day of collection under WMC 8.12.140. Containers are placed in the street with lids closed or in the alley, wheels against the curb, about a foot apart and at least three feet from parked vehicles.
Empty carts come off the street and out of public view
Remove every refuse and recycling container from the curb or alley once it is emptied. Except for the large 300-gallon alley containers, containers have to leave the public right-of-way and be stored on private property where they are not visible from the front or sides of the property.
A weekday holiday shifts collection one day for the rest of the week
Trash, recycling and green waste are collected as regularly scheduled except on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Whenever one of those holidays falls on a weekday, the schedule is delayed one day for the remainder of that week.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.
Free Los Angeles County hazardous waste events and centers
Households with paint, batteries, motor oil, fluorescent tubes or other material that is illegal in the garbage.
Cost & conditions
No charge. Household hazardous waste collection events run by Los Angeles County and the Sanitation Districts are free one-day drive-through events for residents, and the County's permanent collection centers are also free for County residents.
Arrange it
Check the County event calendar and the permanent collection center list for the next date and location, or use the Whittier collection events held at the Whittier Public Parking Lot on Bailey Street.
These events and centers take household hazardous waste and electronics, not bulky furniture or construction debris, and they run only on published dates or posted hours.
