Get it ready
Keep the unit dry and out of the trash cart, because mattresses are listed as unacceptable in the trash, and note that a mattress taken to the Tower Landfill on a free day is charged the gate rate even though the rest of the load is free.
The acceptable bulk items are bagged yard debris, furniture, bundled carpet, dishwashers, doors, hot water heaters, lawn mowers, porcelain sinks and toilets, washers and dryers, barbecue grills, garage doors in four foot sections, mattresses and box springs, and waterbeds by section. The refused list is just as specific: air conditioners, batteries, cast iron, cement, chemicals, construction debris, dirt and rocks, exercise equipment, hazardous waste, medical waste, porcelain tubs, steel, stoves, stumps, tires, glass such as doors, windows, mirrors and windshields, and appliances with Freon including refrigerators.
The cleanup day is once a year and by neighborhood
Once a year residents may place up to five large items at the curb, with the city divided into five areas each served on one of five Saturdays between March and August, published as March 21, March 28, June 13, July 11 and Aug. 1 for their areas. Residents who do not receive the city's regular trash services are not eligible, items go neatly in the driveway or yard without blocking the sidewalk, anything that cannot be picked up has to be removed within 24 hours, and everything must be out before 7 a.m.
Four pre-scheduled free days a year let residents take large quantities of trash or large and oddly shaped items to the Tower Landfill at 19260 E. 88th Ave. Proof of residency by Colorado ID is required, one load per household, every load must be covered with a tarp if it is not contained in the vehicle, mattresses and box springs are charged the current gate rate, cars, vans and SUVs are free along with the first five yards of a pickup or trailer with anything over five yards charged the gate rate plus an applicable fee, and appliances are accepted free only on those days and only without refrigerant. Hazardous materials, used oil, medical waste, ammunition, fireworks, fluorescent bulbs, tires, batteries, electronics and liquids are prohibited there.
Trash goes in the 96 gallon black lid cart and must be bagged with the lid closed, and a household that opts out of recycling can request a second trash cart. Recycling uses the green or light blue lid cart and runs every other week, with material placed loose, empty, clean and dry, and batteries, food waste, scrap metal, foam, mirrors and ceramics never belong in the recycling cart.
