Get it ready
Remove all food from the appliance, secure or take off the doors, and for a refrigerator or freezer empty it completely and remove the doors, which the county requires. Keep appliances out of the garbage, recycling and yard trimmings containers, and note that the e-recycling programme refuses appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, washers and microwaves.
Weekly collection runs once a week for all three streams
DeKalb County collects garbage, recycling and yard trimmings once a week on the same day for Decatur addresses. Containers go out after 7 p.m. the night before collection, have to be curbside by 7 a.m. on the collection day, and come back in within 24 hours of service. Collection schedules change during county-observed holidays and service can be suspended in bad weather, and the county asks residents to check the holiday schedule and the service status notices before reporting a missed pickup.
Bulky items are requested, assessed and paid before collection
Bulky items do not go out with the regular carts. The county lists furniture, mattresses and box springs, bathroom fixtures and appliances as fee required bulky items, and construction material, fencing, decking, tree parts, commingled piles, contractor waste and heavy cardboard as prepaid special collections. The sequence matters: the pile goes to the curb first, then the request is submitted online, by email to solidwaste@dekalbcountyga.gov with photos, or in person at 3720 Leroy Scott Drive, staff assess the pile and leave an assessment form, and the fee is paid before collection.
What never goes in a curb load, and where it goes instead
Tires are refused in the bulky and special collection programmes and are directed to the Seminole Road Landfill, where the county publishes separate rates for tires under 18 inches, tires over 18 inches and tires left on rims. Hazardous materials, concrete products, Bagster bags and liquids are refused as well. Electronic waste goes to the county's e-recycling drop-off at the Seminole Road Landfill on Clevemont Road in Ellenwood, which takes computers, servers, printers, hard drives, cables, phones and flat screen monitors, but expressly refuses televisions and CRT monitors, appliances, alkaline batteries and liquid containing devices.
