The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Smyrna collects its own garbage, curbside recycling and yard waste, and a large item leaves the property through a work order rather than a free annual cleanup. A household that needs a mattress, appliance or piece of furniture collected requests it online or by telephone, pays a per item fee, and puts the item out for the Thursday collection that follows the weekly request deadline. Appliances come with one hard exclusion: the city no longer picks up refrigerators, freezers or air conditioning units at all. Yard waste runs on its own Monday schedule, in paper bags, with limbs and branches capped at eight inches across and four feet long. Renovation material never enters either programme, because the city lists all construction materials, drywall, concrete, tile, roofing, wood, rocks, dirt and vehicle parts as the property owner's responsibility, and contractors have to take their own carpet and trees with them. Electronics go to the city recycling center on Lake Drive instead, which also takes paint for a fee.

Couches, sofas and furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is named in the city's large item programme, which collects it by work order for a per item fee on a Thursday collection rather than with the weekly garbage.

City cost & eligibility
$30 per large item collected through the city work order programme. Smyrna residential sanitation customers, with the request submitted online through the city's Service Request option or by calling the Public Works Department at (770) 431-2850 before the weekly deadline.
When & how
Submit the work order before the weekly deadline, then put the furniture out for the Thursday collection. The city prints two different deadlines for the same programme, Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. on the sanitation page and Monday at 4:30 p.m. on the yard waste and large item page, so confirm the current deadline when the request is placed, and note that no large items are collected during a holiday week.
Get it ready
Keep the piece out of the garbage cart, because only general household waste belongs in carts and construction material is prohibited there. Carpet and padding installed by a carpet contractor stay the contractor's responsibility rather than part of the large item collection.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

Mattresses are named alongside furniture and appliances in the city's large item programme, so a mattress leaves by work order for the per item fee.

City cost & eligibility
$30 per large item collected through the city work order programme. Smyrna residential sanitation customers, with the request placed online or by telephone before the weekly deadline.
When & how
Request the collection before the weekly deadline and have the mattress out for the Thursday pickup, and avoid a holiday week because the city does not collect large items then.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress out of the carts, which take only general household waste, and keep it clear of the street. If a carpet or flooring contractor is on site, remember that contractor-installed carpet and padding are handled by the contractor rather than by the city.

Appliances and white goods

Special rules apply

Appliances are part of the large item programme, but the city states that it will no longer pick up refrigerators, freezers or air conditioning units, so a cooling appliance has no city collection at all.

City cost & eligibility
$30 per large item collected through the city work order programme, for the appliances the city still accepts. Smyrna residential sanitation customers for accepted appliances only; a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioning unit is refused by name and has to be handled some other way.
When & how
Request the pickup before the weekly deadline for a washer, dryer, stove or other accepted appliance and set it out for the Thursday collection, but do not schedule a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner, because the city no longer collects those.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance and keep it out of the garbage cart. Any item containing refrigerant is on the city's prohibited list alongside hazardous waste, pressure cylinders, oxygen tanks, batteries, paint, rubber tires, yard waste, inert building material, motor oil and cooking oil, all of which have to go to an appropriate recycling facility or approved landfill instead.

Televisions, electronics and paints

Special rules apply

Electronics are not part of the curb or large item programmes; the city routes electronic and glass recycling to the Smyrna Recycling Center on Lake Drive, where paint is also taken for a fee.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes the recycling center and its telephone number along with a fee for paint but no amount for electronic drop-off and no opening hours, so confirm what the center accepts and what it charges by calling (770) 431-2869 before loading a vehicle.
When & how
Call the Smyrna Recycling Center at (770) 431-2869 and take the devices to 3475 Lake Drive, Smyrna, GA 30082 once the center confirms its hours and the items it takes.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data from a computer, phone or drive before it leaves the house, and keep electronics, batteries, paint and other prohibited items out of the garbage cart, because the city permits only general household waste there and lists hazardous waste, batteries and paint as items that must go to a recycling facility or approved landfill.

Construction and demolition debris

Not on the regular city route

Construction material is not collected by the city. The yard waste and large item page lists it among the things the property owner has to remove.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no rate for construction debris because it does not collect it: the owner responsibility list puts all construction materials, drywall, concrete, tile, roofing, wood, rocks, dirt and vehicle parts on the property owner, so the price comes from whatever hauler or contractor the owner hires.
When & how
Arrange the removal before the material accumulates, and keep it out of the garbage cart and the large item pile for the whole project because the city refuses construction material in both.
Get it ready
Separate the material the project can recycle and keep liquids, paint and hazardous products out of the load, because the city's prohibited items list sends those to a recycling facility or approved landfill instead. Contractor-installed carpet and tree work stay with the contractor.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named in the city's large item description, so a treadmill or weight machine has to be confirmed with Public Works before it is scheduled.

City cost & eligibility
The large item programme charges a per item fee, but the city names furniture, appliances and mattresses rather than exercise machines, so confirm acceptance and the fee with the Public Works Department at (770) 431-2850 before submitting the work order.
When & how
Call Public Works and describe the machine, then submit the work order only if the city confirms it belongs in the large item programme.
Get it ready
Give the size and weight when you call, take the console or any battery pack off so the electronics go to the recycling center instead of the pile, and keep the machine out of the garbage cart.

Bulky items and household clutter

Smyrna runs a work order large item programme for household items too big for the cart, charging a per item fee and collecting on Thursdays with no pickups during holiday weeks.

City cost & eligibility
$30 per large item collected through the city work order programme. Smyrna residential sanitation customers, with the request made online through the Service Request option or by telephone to Public Works before the weekly deadline.
When & how
Place the work order before the weekly deadline and set the items out for the Thursday collection, checking the current deadline because the city publishes it as Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. on one page and Monday at 4:30 p.m. on another, and remembering that no large items are collected during a holiday week.
Get it ready
Keep only general household waste in the carts, bagged and loose of debris, and keep the prohibited items out of the pile: hazardous waste, anything containing refrigerant, pressure cylinders, oxygen tanks, batteries, paint, rubber tires, yard waste, inert building material, motor oil and cooking oil. Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioning units are not collected at all.

The handoff matters

Right item.

Large items run on a work order with a weekly deadline

Furniture, appliances and mattresses do not go out with the weekly garbage in Smyrna. A resident requests a large item collection online through the city's Service Request option or by calling the Public Works Department at (770) 431-2850, pays a per item fee, and the collection is scheduled for a Thursday. The two city pages print different weekly deadlines, Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. on the sanitation page and Monday at 4:30 p.m. on the yard waste and large item page, so confirm which applies when the request is placed. No large items are collected during a holiday week.

What the carts take, and what the city refuses outright

Only city-provided carts are collected, all garbage has to be bagged with no loose debris inside, and only general household waste belongs there. The city lists these items as prohibited within the city and directs them to an appropriate recycling facility or approved landfill: hazardous waste, anything containing refrigerant, pressure cylinders, oxygen tanks, batteries, paint, rubber tires, yard waste, inert building material, motor oil and cooking oil. Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioning units are no longer picked up on a large item collection either, so a cooling appliance needs a different route entirely.

Yard waste has its own Monday schedule and paper bag rule

Leaves, grass clippings and small sticks or brush go out in paper bags, because plastic bags are prohibited, and no rocks or dirt belong in the bag. Limbs, branches and small trees no wider than eight inches and no longer than four feet are collected on Mondays and have to be at the curb by 7 a.m., placed away from trees, power lines and fences. There is no yard debris pickup during a holiday week, and material from a tree service stays the tree service's responsibility rather than the city's.

Take electronics and paint to the city recycling center

A Smyrna household with electronic waste, glass or paint that cannot go in the cart or the large item pile.

Arrange removal for construction and eviction debris

A household or contractor with construction material, drywall, concrete, tile, roofing, wood, rocks, dirt, vehicle parts or eviction debris.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self-hauling in Smyrna divides by material. Large household items such as furniture, mattresses and the appliances the city still accepts go out through the city's work order programme, requested online or by telephone, charged per item, and collected on a Thursday after that week's deadline, which the city prints as Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. on one page and Monday at 4:30 p.m. on another, so confirm it when booking. Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioning units are no longer collected, and neither are the prohibited items the city lists: hazardous waste, anything containing refrigerant, pressure cylinders, oxygen tanks, batteries, paint, rubber tires, yard waste, inert building material, motor oil and cooking oil. Electronics and glass go instead to the Smyrna Recycling Center at 3475 Lake Drive, where paint is also accepted for a fee, and the center's hours and charges have to be confirmed at (770) 431-2869 because the city does not publish them. How does a couch leave a Smyrna home?

Through the city's large item programme, which the sanitation page describes as furniture, appliances and mattresses collected by work order for a per item fee. The request goes in online through the city's Service Request option or by telephone to Public Works, the collection is scheduled for a Thursday, and no large items are collected during a holiday week. The city prints the weekly deadline two ways on its own pages, so confirm which applies when the request is placed.Official guidance

Will Smyrna collect a mattress?

Yes. The city's large item programme names mattresses with furniture and appliances and collects them by work order for a per item fee, with the pickup scheduled on a Thursday. Request it online through the city's Service Request option or call Public Works, confirm the weekly deadline because the city prints it two ways, and avoid holiday weeks when large items are not collected.Official guidance

Does Smyrna collect a refrigerator or air conditioner?

No. Both the sanitation page and the large item page state that the city will no longer pick up refrigerators, freezers or a/c units, and the prohibited items list also refuses any item containing refrigerant, pressure cylinders, oxygen tanks, batteries, paint, rubber tires, motor oil and cooking oil. Those items have to go to an appropriate recycling facility or approved landfill. Washers, dryers and other accepted appliances still go through the large item work order programme for the per item fee.Official guidance

Where do televisions and computers go in Smyrna?

To the Smyrna Recycling Center at 3475 Lake Drive, which the city names for electronic and glass recycling and can be reached at (770) 431-2869. Paint is also taken there for a fee. Electronic devices are not part of the curbside programme or the large item collection, and the city's prohibited items list keeps batteries, paint and hazardous waste out of the garbage carts.Official guidance

How does the Smyrna large item collection work?

The city collects large household items such as furniture, appliances and mattresses once a resident makes a work order request, either online through the Service Request option or by calling Public Works at (770) 431-2850. There is a per item fee, the collection is scheduled for a Thursday after the weekly deadline, and no large items are collected during a holiday week. Refrigerators, freezers and a/c units are no longer picked up, and construction material, vehicle parts, rocks and dirt are the property owner's responsibility.Official guidance

Who collects trash and bulky items in Smyrna?

The City of Smyrna's own Sanitation Division does, under the Public Works Department, and it provides residential garbage removal, curbside recycling and yard waste removal. Large items are handled by a work order request made online or through the Public Works telephone line, and the city recycling center on Lake Drive takes electronics, glass and paint instead of the curb programme. Public Works can be reached at (770) 431-2850 and the recycling center at (770) 431-2869.Official guidance

What does a Smyrna large item pickup cost?

The city charges a fee for each large item and collects it on a Thursday after the household submits a work order request, either online through the Service Request option or by calling Public Works at (770) 431-2850. The request deadline is printed as Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. on the sanitation page and Monday at 4:30 p.m. on the yard waste and large item page, so confirm which applies, and remember that no large items are collected during a holiday week.Official guidance

What will Smyrna not collect?

Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioning units are no longer picked up on a large item collection, and the city's prohibited items list covers hazardous waste, anything containing refrigerant, pressure cylinders, oxygen tanks, batteries, paint, rubber tires, yard waste, inert building material, motor oil and cooking oil, which have to go to an appropriate recycling facility or approved landfill. Construction material, drywall, concrete, tile, roofing, wood, rocks, dirt, vehicle parts and eviction debris are the property owner's responsibility.Official guidance
