The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Woodstock does not run its own trash trucks. The city negotiates a single residential franchise, and under an agreement approved on April 13, 2026, Red Oak Sanitation takes over curbside collection on July 1, 2026 for about 12,076 households. Red Oak collects garbage, single stream recycling, yard waste and bulky items once a week Monday through Friday, and the company handles the carts, billing and customer service. A household that needs to put out more than two bulky items at one time has to notify Red Oak in advance. The rest of the stream has firm limits: one provided 95 gallon trash cart plus up to eight bags no larger than 13 gallons each, recycling inside the provided cart, and yard waste in bags or bundles with limbs cut to 4 feet or less and up to eight bags per pickup. Items the weekly service is not built for can go to the Cherokee County Recycling Center on Blalock Road, while construction debris, wood and large loads go to one of two privately owned county landfills.

Accepted with preparation

Furniture leaves through the weekly bulky item allowance rather than the trash cart, and the city franchise includes up to two bulky items a week at no additional charge.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. When & how
Set the furniture out with the regular weekly collection day for the street and call Red Oak Sanitation ahead of the pickup when more than two bulky items will be waiting at once. Households with medical or accessibility needs can ask the operator about backdoor collection.
Get it ready
Keep upholstery dry enough to lift and take loose parts, cushions and drawers out of the piece so the crew can handle it in one pass. Do not mix construction material, wood offcuts, paint, batteries or tires into the pile.

Get it ready
Keep the bedding dry and free of bedbugs or mould, bag it when the weather is wet so it stays liftable, and set it flat where the crew can reach it without blocking a sidewalk or driveway.

Appliances and white goods

Special rules apply

A large appliance is handled as a bulky item on the weekly route, and the county recycling center takes appliances at its Blalock Road location, but neither the city nor the county states how a cooling appliance is prepared at the curb.

City cost & eligibility
The weekly franchise includes up to two bulky items a week at no additional charge, and the county lists appliances among its pay items at the Blalock Road site, but neither retained page says whether refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners are collected at the curb or who removes refrigerant. When & how
Call Red Oak Sanitation before the collection day to confirm how the appliance will be handled and whether it counts toward the two bulky items for that week, or take it to the Cherokee County Recycling Center at Blalock Road during its published hours.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance of food and water, secure or remove the doors so a child or pet cannot be trapped, and keep refrigerant containing units such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners out of the pile until the operator confirms how the unit should be prepared.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Special rules apply

Electronics are not part of the weekly curbside franchise, and the county recycling center takes flat screen televisions, flat screen monitors and most electronics at Blalock Road while refusing tube and projection televisions and CRT monitors.

City cost & eligibility
The Cherokee County price list charges $20 per flat screen television and $10 per flat screen computer monitor at the Blalock Road site, with a $1 transaction fee up to $50 and 3 percent on larger amounts, while tube and projection televisions and CRT monitors are refused there and no curbside electronics route exists on the retained city pages. Confirm the item and the current list before loading, because flat screen only means LED, LCD or plasma.
When & how
Take accepted electronics to the Cherokee County Recycling Center at 470 Blalock Road in Canton, open Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, or check the city's annual household hazardous waste and recycling event before driving.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data from computers, phones and drives before they leave the house, keep each device dry and intact, and never put batteries, bulbs or a tube television into a curbside cart because the county refuses those items.

Construction and demolition debris

Not on the regular city route

Construction and remodeling material is outside the residential franchise and is refused at the county recycling center, so it has to go to one of the two privately owned landfills in Cherokee County.

City cost & eligibility
The county recycling center refuses building materials, home remodeling material and construction waste, and the county directs large items, commercial material, construction debris and wood to one of the two privately owned landfills, which set their own fees by weight or item. Confirm the rate with the landfill that will take the load before hauling it.
When & how
Call the landfill that will take the load before it is moved, then deliver the material directly rather than setting it out for the weekly residential pickup, which does not cover construction or remodeling work.
Get it ready
Separate anything the county will accept, such as flattened cardboard, clean glass, metal and bagged vegetative material, from the load that has to go to the landfill, and keep concrete, treated wood and heavy demolition material out of the curbside carts.

Exercise equipment

Accepted with preparation

A treadmill, bike or weight bench is a bulky item, so it leaves through the weekly pickup rather than the trash cart and counts toward the two bulky items a week.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Woodstock households served by Red Oak Sanitation, for up to two bulky items per week; a household putting out more than two bulky items at one time has to notify the operator in advance and should confirm any charge beyond the included allowance.
When & how
Set the equipment out on the regular collection day and call Red Oak Sanitation ahead of time if more than two bulky items will be waiting at the curb at once.
Get it ready
Take off the console and any battery pack so the frame stays light enough for the crew, remove loose weights and accessories, and fold a treadmill or bench where the manufacturer allows it so the piece does not block the sidewalk.

Use the regular weekly collection day and call Red Oak Sanitation in advance when the pile holds more than two bulky items, when several pieces have to come out together, or when a resident needs backdoor collection for medical or accessibility reasons.
Get it ready
Keep the pile small enough to move by hand, leave sidewalks, driveways, hydrants and mailboxes clear, bag loose material, and keep prohibited items such as tires, paint, batteries, construction material and wood separate from what the curbside crew is allowed to take.

The handoff matters

Right item.

Weekly collection covers trash, recycling, yard waste and bulky items

Red Oak Sanitation collects once a week Monday through Friday under the city franchise, with single stream recycling on the same day as garbage. Each household gets one 95 gallon trash cart and may add up to eight bags that hold no more than 13 gallons each, and recyclables have to fit inside the provided recycling cart and follow the county guidelines. Yard waste goes out in bags or bundles with limbs cut to 4 feet or less, limited to eight bags or bundles per pickup, a limit shared with the trash bag allowance. Two bulky items a week are included, and a household with more than two bulky items to put out at one time has to notify Red Oak Sanitation in advance.

Bulky items are free up to two a week with notice for larger piles

Furniture, mattresses, appliances and other oversized pieces leave through the same weekly service rather than the trash cart. Two bulky items a week are included with no additional charge, which covers a couch, a mattress or a single appliance. A household that needs to put out more than two bulky items at one time has to call Red Oak Sanitation ahead of the pickup so the load can be arranged, and residents with medical or accessibility needs can ask the operator about backdoor collection. The pile itself should stay liftable by hand and clear of sidewalks, driveways, hydrants and mailboxes.

Hazardous and building material belongs at the county, not the curb truck

The Cherokee County Recycling Center publishes what it will and will not take. It refuses commercial recycling including small home businesses, tube and projection televisions, CRT monitors, light bulbs of any type, unbagged household trash, wood or plastic furniture, plastic film, tires, motor oil, antifreeze, building and remodeling material and construction waste, and it turns away loads larger than a pickup or SUV bed. Vegetation is taken only when bagged, at a published per bag rate. Large items, commercial material, construction debris and wood go instead to one of the two privately owned landfills in the county, which charge their own rates. Cardboard has to arrive flattened and single stream material has to be in a container, because staff will not unload loose material.

A Woodstock household inside the city limits with furniture, a mattress, an appliance or up to two bulky items to put out with the regular collection.

Cost & conditions
$48 per quarter for one trash cart and one recycling cart under the city's Red Oak Sanitation agreement, with additional carts available for an additional monthly fee. Residential accounts inside the city limits of Woodstock served by the franchise that begins July 1, 2026; billing and customer service run through Red Oak Sanitation rather than the city.
Arrange it
Watch for the billing, service day and holiday information the operator sends before the July 1, 2026 start, put the carts and any bulky items out on the household's weekly collection day, and call Red Oak in advance when more than two bulky items will be at the curb at one time.

The franchise covers residential curbside collection only. It does not take construction and remodeling debris, wood, paint, batteries, tires or commercial material, and the charge for additional carts is set by the operator rather than published by the city.

Take household items to the Cherokee County Recycling Center

A household that would rather haul recyclables, appliances, mattresses, electronics, batteries, paint or scrap metal than set them out for the weekly pickup.

Cost & conditions
Recyclables such as cans, paper, plastic bottles and containers, flattened cardboard and glass are free for Cherokee County residents, while the published price list charges separate amounts for pay items including $20 per mattress or box spring, $15 for a full size appliance, $20 for a flat screen television, $10 for a flat screen computer monitor and $5 for a one gallon can of paint, with a $1 transaction fee up to $50 and 3 percent on larger amounts and $10 for out-of-county loads. Check the current list before loading.
Arrange it
Take the load to 470 Blalock Road in Canton, the site that accepts single stream recycling, glass and every pay item. It opens Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, and stays closed Sunday and Monday.

Commercial recycling including small home businesses is refused, only one visit per day is allowed, cardboard has to be flattened and single stream material has to arrive in a container because staff will not unload loose material. Tube and projection televisions, CRT monitors, light bulbs, wood or plastic furniture, plastic film, tires, motor oil, antifreeze, construction and remodeling material and loads larger than a pickup or SUV bed are refused.

Haul construction debris and large loads to a Cherokee County landfill

A homeowner with construction or remodeling debris, wood, a large item or a load the recycling center will not accept.

Cost & conditions
Two privately owned landfills operate in Cherokee County and set their own fees for weight or for the item, and the county publishes no rate for them, so confirm the charge and the accepted material with the landfill before the load leaves the property.
Arrange it
Call the landfill that will take the material to confirm its rates and hours, then deliver the load directly rather than setting it out for the residential pickup, which does not cover construction or remodeling work.

These are private sites rather than a city or county service, so tipping rules, accepted material and charges differ between them. Large items, commercial material, construction debris and wood cannot go to the recycling center.

Use the city's household hazardous waste collection event

A household holding batteries, electronics, paper to shred, textiles, cell phones, eyeglasses, ink cartridges or compact fluorescent bulbs that should not go in a cart.

Cost & conditions
The city describes the annual household hazardous waste collection event and the seasonal recycling event it runs with as no-cost opportunities, but the retained page announces the earlier year's date and registration, so confirm the current year's date, location and accepted materials before loading a vehicle.
Arrange it
Check the city newsroom and the registration page the city links for the current year's event, then register if the city requires it and bring the items during the published window.

The event runs on a single announced day rather than year round, the retained page does not carry the current year's details, and material that is not on the event's accepted list still has to go to the county recycling center or a landfill.

How does a couch leave a Woodstock home?

Through the weekly bulky item pickup that the city franchise with Red Oak Sanitation includes, which takes up to two bulky items a week at no additional charge. Put the couch out on the regular collection day, take the cushions and loose parts off, and call the operator in advance when more than two bulky items will be at the curb at one time.Official guidance

How do I get rid of a mattress in Woodstock?

A mattress or box spring counts toward the two bulky items a week that the city franchise collects at no additional charge, so it goes out with the regular collection day rather than in the trash cart. The Cherokee County Recycling Center also accepts mattresses at its Blalock Road site, where the price list charges a fee per item and the site is open Tuesday through Friday and Saturday mornings.Official guidance

Will the curbside crew take an appliance?

A large appliance is handled as a bulky item on the weekly route, and the franchise includes up to two bulky items a week at no additional charge. Because the city and county pages do not say how a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner is prepared at the curb or who handles the refrigerant, call Red Oak Sanitation first, and always empty the unit and secure or remove its doors.Official guidance

Where do televisions and computers go in Woodstock?

To the Cherokee County Recycling Center at Blalock Road, which takes flat screen televisions and flat screen computer monitors along with most other electronics but refuses tube and projection televisions and CRT monitors. The price list charges a fee per screen and per monitor, and the site opens Tuesday through Friday and Saturday morning, so check the list and wipe personal data before the trip.Official guidance

What counts as a bulky item in Woodstock?

Anything too large for the cart that the weekly truck can still lift, such as a couch, a mattress, a single appliance or a weight bench. The franchise includes up to two bulky items a week at no additional charge, and a household with more than two bulky items to put out at one time has to notify Red Oak Sanitation in advance so the pickup can be arranged.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Woodstock?

Red Oak Sanitation does, under a city franchise agreement approved on April 13, 2026 that begins July 1, 2026. The city negotiates a single residential provider and holds it to performance standards rather than running its own trucks, and Red Oak collects garbage, single stream recycling, yard waste and bulky items once a week Monday through Friday for roughly 12,076 households. Billing and customer service run through the operator, and the city sanitation page links to the operator's Woodstock service page.Official guidance

Is there a charge for bulky item pickup in Woodstock?

No charge for the first two bulky items each week, because the city franchise includes weekly bulky item pickup of up to two items per week at no additional charge. A household that needs to put out more than two bulky items at one time has to notify Red Oak Sanitation in advance, and the charge for a larger load or an extra cart is set by the operator rather than published by the city, so confirm it before the pickup.Official guidance

What will Cherokee County not take at the recycling center?

The county refuses commercial recycling including small home businesses, tube and projection televisions, CRT monitors, light bulbs of any type, unbagged household trash, wood or plastic furniture where only metal is accepted, plastic film, motor oil, antifreeze, tires, building and remodeling material, construction waste and loads larger than a pickup or SUV bed. Vegetation is accepted only when bagged, and large items, construction debris and wood have to go to one of the two privately owned landfills in the county.Official guidance

Where do paint, batteries and chemicals go in Woodstock?

Paint, batteries and most electronics go to the Cherokee County Recycling Center at Blalock Road, where the price list charges each as a pay item and recyclables stay free for county residents.
