The local disposal guide
Acworth runs its own sanitation division, so every home inside the city limits has a weekly city collection for garbage and for yard waste and dry items, plus a separate scheduled route for large items. Sofas, mattresses and appliances that will not fit in the 95-gallon cart go out by appointment with a large item tag and a per-item charge added to the next bill, while tires, construction debris and other restricted material sit outside the curbside service and travel to the Cobb County transfer station in Marietta. Dropcurb hauls residential items from addresses across Acworth.

Acworth collects household garbage from every single-family and two-family home inside the city limits. Refuse goes in the 95-gallon roll cart the city assigns to your address, and the cart is emptied once a week on the day set for your street.
The weekly route also takes yard waste and dry items. Leaves, clippings, limbs and bundled brush go out in paperboard boxes, reusable bins or yard waste bags, and the same service takes flattened cardboard, broken-down household paneling and drywall, doors, windows and small panes of glass.
Anything that will not fit inside the 95-gallon cart counts as a large item, and the city ordinance names couches, sofas, love seats, chairs, desks and tables along with other pieces over 50 pounds. The city collects these at the curb, but the pickup has to be arranged ahead of time and the item needs a large item tag.
Mattresses of any size and box springs are named as large items in the city ordinance, so they go out with the scheduled large item collection rather than in the cart. The city also asks that bedding be stacked neatly at the curb.
Large appliances are on the city list, which covers washing machines, dryers, automatic dishwashers and refrigerators. A cooling appliance needs one extra step first, because a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner has to have its refrigerant withdrawn and the unit tagged by a certified technician before the crew will take it.
Televisions are not named in the city large item list, so the route depends on the size of the set. A television that will not fit wholly inside the 95-gallon cart meets the ordinance definition of a large item and goes out with a scheduled pickup, while a small set can go in the cart with the household garbage.
Exercise equipment is not named in the ordinance, but a treadmill, elliptical or weight machine that will not fit in the 95-gallon cart, or that weighs more than 50 pounds, falls under the general large item definition. Confirm the item with customer service before you set it out.
Acworth city crews do not run a separate electronics collection. Small electronics can go in the garbage cart and a bulky unit that will not fit goes out as a large item, while the recycling route is Cobb County, where the transfer station takes a long list of electronics for a fee and periodic community recycling events collect them as well. Televisions are left out of that electronics recycling drop.
Construction debris is on the city do-not-collect list, and so are large remodeling items and large lumber. The one narrow exception is a resident's own small remodel waste, because paneling and drywall broken into short light pieces, and short sections of lumber, travel with the weekly dry item route.
Tires are named on the city do-not-collect list, along with batteries and pool chemicals, so they never go out with the garbage or in a large item pile. The Cobb County transfer station takes them at the scale house.
The handoff matters
Large items need a booked pickup and a tag. Call customer service at 770-917-8903 at least one business day before the Thursday run, collect the large item pickup tag, and display it in plain view on the item. Place items at the curb away from mailboxes, trees and utility boxes so the pile does not block the sidewalk or the roadway.
SanitationOrdinance 2021-29, Chapter 78 Solid WasteGarbage and yard waste have to be at the curb or the edge of the paved roadway in front of the dwelling by 6:30 a.m. on your collection day. Refuse must be bagged and tied inside the city cart, and any cart placed for collection has to leave the sidewalk and the roadway clear.
Ordinance 2021-29, Chapter 78 Solid WasteSanitationTires, batteries, construction debris, large remodeling items, wet paint, large tree limbs, rocks, dirt, logs, large lumber, pool chemicals and hazardous waste are outside the city collection service. Route tires and construction material to the Cobb County transfer station and check with the city or the county before setting out anything else on that list.
