Prepare a real tree for composting
Remove the decorations and stand completely. NYC’s guidance treats real trees as compostable material, so avoid wrapping the tree in plastic. Use the current collection schedule rather than assuming a special January-only pickup window.

Keep artificial trees out of compost
An artificial tree is a mixed-material item. Follow DSNY’s instructions for its recyclable metal pieces and the remainder. If you want to give away a usable tree, arrange that handoff before placing it with waste.

When Dropcurb helps
For an accepted artificial Christmas tree of 10 feet or less, Dropcurb provides paid pickup once it is outside and accessible, subject to availability at your address. Select the artificial-tree item. Use the city’s composting instructions for a real tree; the artificial-tree selection does not cover it.
