How can I get rid of an old bicycle?

Start with the bicycle’s condition. Bikes for the World accepts many complete, serviceable adult and child bicycles, including some with flat tires or minor missing parts, but excludes bicycles with severe rust, seized components and some nonworking e-bikes with dead lithium batteries. If the bicycle is beyond that condition, check your local metal-recycling or bulk-collection rules. In New York City, metal bicycles can go through bulk recycling, while lithium batteries must be handled separately.

Choose the route by condition

For a usable or repairable bicycle, check Bikes for the World’s current collection or drop-off location. Its acceptance is not universal, so confirm that the bicycle’s condition and type qualify before transporting it.

For a severely rusted, seized or otherwise unusable bicycle, look for a local metal-recycling or bulk-collection option. Rules vary by jurisdiction. New York City specifically lists metal bicycles for bulk recycling.

Handle an electric bicycle battery separately

Do not put a lithium-ion battery or a device containing one in household trash or municipal recycling. Use a qualified battery or electronics recycler, or a household hazardous-waste collection. Do not pry open the battery or attempt to remove a non-user-serviceable battery. Damaged batteries need manufacturer-specific handling.

Prepare the bicycle for pickup or drop-off

Confirm the receiving program before you move the bicycle. For standard outdoor pickup, the bicycle must be outside and accessible before the pickup; you can book before moving it outside. If you cannot move it outdoors yourself, use a service that includes indoor carrying.

When Dropcurb fits

Dropcurb fits an accepted non-electric bicycle when it is already outside and accessible before pickup. The current bicycle scope covers one adult or child bicycle, including road, mountain, BMX and folding bikes. For accepted items already outside, Dropcurb handles loading, transport and disposal. If the bicycle is indoors and you need someone to carry it out, choose a service that includes indoor labor.
