What to do with your old mattress when a new one arrives

When buying a new mattress, first confirm whether the retailer will remove the old mattress and box spring during delivery. IKEA US lists qualifying removal in California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island, subject to order, item and location conditions; Costco also treats mattresses and box springs separately from other furniture. Confirm the exact removal terms before delivery, keep the old and new items separate and dry, and arrange a backup recycling or pickup option so the old bed is gone around the delivery date.

Prepare for delivery

Ask the retailer to confirm which items are included, including the mattress, box spring or frame, and whether condition and access requirements apply. Do not assume a used mattress will be accepted for donation. If the retailer’s removal is unavailable or uncertain, arrange a local recycling or pickup backup before the new mattress arrives.

If you are in New York City, seal the mattress and box spring in plastic before municipal bulk collection. This packaging rule is specific to NYC, not a national requirement.

Before choosing city collection, check mattress curbside preparation and set-out rules for your address.

When outdoor pickup is the practical backup

If retailer removal or a local route is unsuitable, Dropcurb handles an accepted mattress or box spring that is already outside and accessible, including loading, transportation and disposal. A mattress and box spring are separate items, so select each applicable item and check its current price. You can book before moving them outside, but both items must be ready and accessible before pickup. If you need someone to carry the mattress out from indoors, use a service that includes indoor carrying.

Review the mattress pickup scope to select the mattress and any separate support pieces.
