Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.
Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

A bag or box of trash and a small television take the cheapest sticker, furniture and a twin mattress take a mid range sticker, a queen or king mattress takes two, and a curbside appliance takes a seven sticker set that has to be scheduled by telephone first.
A couch or love seat, desk, table, sectional piece, crib, entertainment centre or up to four kitchen chairs each take one mid range sticker at the curb, and the same furniture is free during the Spring Cleanup week inside a one truckload limit.
A twin or double mattress takes one mid range sticker at the curb, while a queen or king mattress or box spring takes two, and mattresses are also on the accepted list for the free Spring Cleanup week.
A curbside appliance takes a seven sticker set and has to be scheduled by telephone before it is put out, with refrigerators and freezers going out with the doors removed. The free scrap appliance and metal drop-off events take appliances without any sticker, and appliances are refused at Spring Cleanup and at the Grimes hazardous waste site.
Televisions and monitors are refused at the scrap metal events, so they go out free during the Spring Cleanup week or at the curb with a sticker whose count depends on the screen size. Other electronics, including computers, towers, printers, fax machines, DVD players, VCRs, game systems and cell phones, are on the free scrap metal drop-off list.
The city publishes no construction route. Spring Cleanup refuses construction and demolition waste, concrete chunks of all sizes, asphalt shingles, wooden playsets, fencing, home improvement and landscaping items, and the scrap metal event refuses wood and plastics, so a project load goes with a private hauler.
Exercise equipment is named on the free scrap appliance and metal drop-off list, so a treadmill or weight machine goes to one of the two published drop-off events at Public Services East rather than into the garbage cart or a Spring Cleanup pile.
The city runs a free residential scrap tire collection with Metro Waste Authority on one published spring date, open only to West Des Moines residents, at Public Services East. Tires are refused at Spring Cleanup and at the Grimes hazardous waste site, and the authority keeps year round drop-off containers for anyone who misses the event.
Household chemicals, cleaners and oils have two routes. Residents can drop them at the Metro hazardous waste site in Bondurant, or at the Metro Northwest transfer station in Grimes by appointment or without one on the second Saturday of the month from March through November. A paid house side service collects oil based paints, lawn chemicals, sharps and CFL bulbs from the door in two bins.

Keep extra items at least six feet from the garbage cart, and call the authority to schedule an appliance pickup before it goes out.
