West Des Moines runs its own garbage collection for single family homes, duplexes, triplexes and four plexes, with the bills on the monthly municipal services bill, but it hands the disposal system to Metro Waste Authority, and that is where most large items are solved. Anything bigger than the cart goes out curbside with a Metro Waste Authority sticker, and the sticker count rises with the item: one sticker for a couch, love seat, desk, table or twin mattress, two for a queen or king mattress or box spring, and a seven sticker set for a curbside appliance, which has to be scheduled by phone before it is set out. Twice a year the city opens a free scrap appliance and metal drop-off that takes appliances, metal, computers and even exercise equipment, though never a television or monitor.
