Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Extra trash and large items

Accepted with preparation

Oversize material goes out curbside on the Metro Waste Authority sticker programme. A bag or box of trash and a small television take the cheapest sticker, furniture and a twin mattress take a mid range sticker, a queen or king mattress takes two, and a curbside appliance takes a seven sticker set that has to be scheduled by telephone first.

City cost & eligibility
From $1 for the smallest published large and extra item sticker, with larger items needing more stickers from the same published chart. Available to households in communities served by the programme, with the item counts published for communities using the orange sticker. Stickers are bought online for delivery or from grocery and hardware store service desks and city halls, and the number needed depends on the community, so the city directs residents to the authority for their own requirement.
When & how
Buy the stickers, then put the material out on the normal collection day with the sticker attached, keeping extra items at least six feet from the garbage cart. A curbside appliance has to be scheduled on the authority line before it is set out.
Get it ready
Attach the correct number of stickers for the item and keep refuse out of the sticker load, because bagged and boxed trash inside the cart is separate from the sticker programme. Drained equipment, such as a push mower or snow blower with the fuel and oil removed and a grill with no propane tank, is what the published counts cover.

Electronics and televisions

Accepted with preparation

Televisions and monitors are refused at the scrap metal events, so they go out free during the Spring Cleanup week or at the curb with a sticker whose count depends on the screen size. Other electronics, including computers, towers, printers, fax machines, DVD players, VCRs, game systems and cell phones, are on the free scrap metal drop-off list.

City cost & eligibility
The two published sources give different sticker counts for a television. The city page says televisions and monitors go to the curb with a five dollar waste sticker, while the authority's chart prices a television or computer monitor with a nineteen inch screen or smaller at one sticker and asks for a telephone call to size anything larger. Because the amount depends on the screen and the two published figures disagree, the cost is confirmed with the authority before the device goes out.
When & how
Take a television to the free Spring Cleanup week on the normal garbage day, or set it out at the curb on the normal collection day once the sticker count has been confirmed with the authority. Take other devices to the free scrap appliance and metal drop-off event between 8 AM and noon on its published date.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data from a computer, phone or drive before it leaves the house, and keep electronics out of the trash cart. Never take a television or monitor to the scrap metal event, because both are refused there, and keep electronic devices away from the Grimes hazardous waste site for the same reason.

Stickers for anything the cart cannot hold

Oversize items and extra trash go out with the Metro Waste Authority sticker attached, and the number of stickers rises with the item: one for a bag or box of trash under thirty pounds, one for a small television, one for a couch, love seat, desk, table, up to four kitchen chairs, a toilet base or tank, a window or a twin mattress, two for a queen or king mattress or box spring, and seven for a curbside appliance. Keep extra items at least six feet from the garbage cart, and call the authority to schedule an appliance pickup before it goes out.

Spring Cleanup takes one truckload, on the normal garbage day

Spring Cleanup is free to households that receive city collection, runs in the published collection week in the first days of June, and takes household items that do not fit the cart, including couches, end tables, mattresses, televisions, monitors, fans, lamps, grills with the propane tank removed, and carpet rolled and secured to no more than four feet by eighteen inches. The whole pile has to fit in the bed of one standard pickup truck or it is all left behind, every item has to be light enough for two people to lift safely, and items go out no earlier than 5:00 pm the night before and no later than 6:00 am on the collection day. Appliances, construction material, tires, glass, bagged or boxed items, propane tanks and hazardous material are all refused.

City of West Des Moines Public Services, with Metro Waste Authority

Use a large item sticker at the curb

A West Des Moines household with furniture, a mattress, a small television, extra trash or an appliance to clear on the normal collection day.

Cost & conditions
From $1 for the smallest published large and extra item sticker, with the item counts rising to a seven sticker set for a curbside appliance. Available on the published terms for communities in the programme, with stickers bought online for delivery or at grocery and hardware store service desks and city halls. The number of stickers depends on the community, so the city directs residents to the authority to check their own requirement.
Arrange it
Buy the stickers, attach them to the items, set the material out on the normal collection day at least six feet from the garbage cart, and call the authority to schedule an appliance pickup before an appliance goes out.

The sticker programme covers what the chart lists, so household garbage inside the cart is separate and construction material, tires and hazardous material are not part of it at all. An appliance has to be scheduled by telephone first, and televisions need the count confirmed because the published figures differ by screen size.

Hold the big items for Spring Cleanup week

A West Des Moines household that receives city collection and has furniture, mattresses, televisions or other bulky household items that fit in one truckload.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Free to West Des Moines residents who receive city provided garbage collection, with the pile limited to one standard pickup truck bed and every item light enough for two people to lift safely. A pile larger than one truckload is left behind in full.
Arrange it
Put the items at the curb on the normal garbage collection day during the published collection week in early June, no earlier than 5:00 pm the night before and no later than 6:00 am on the collection day.

Appliances, construction and demolition material, concrete, asphalt shingles, fencing, playsets, yard waste, bagged or boxed items, glass, tires, vehicles, propane tanks and hazardous material are all refused, and anything the hauler leaves becomes the resident's responsibility to dispose of.

Take appliances, metal and electronics to the free drop-off event

A West Des Moines household with an appliance, scrap metal, a computer or exercise equipment that the regular trash cycle will not take.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Free drop-off for West Des Moines residents on the published event dates, for household appliances and scrap metal that are not typically collected in regular trash cycles. Televisions, monitors, chemicals, paint, wood, plastics, light bulbs, garbage and anything containing food are refused.
Arrange it
Bring the load to Public Services East, 560 S. 16th Street, between 8 AM and noon on a published drop-off date. Appliances, computers, metal items and exercise equipment are all on the accepted list.

The event refuses televisions and monitors, which have their own routes, and it refuses anything from a business, so it is a residential drop-off only. Food must be emptied from a freezer or refrigerator before the event.

With a new purchase

Arrange a private haul for a project or an excluded load

A West Des Moines household or contractor with construction material or a heavy load that the city's routes refuse.

Cost & conditions
No city service covers construction material and the city publishes no rate for it, so the price is the hauler's or the receiving site's. The terms are confirmed with the hauler before the load is built, because the material is refused at Spring Cleanup and at the scrap metal event.
Arrange it
Contact a hauler serving West Des Moines, describe the material and the access at the property, and confirm where the load goes and what it costs.

Construction and demolition waste, concrete, asphalt shingles, fencing, playsets, home improvement debris, wood and plastics are all outside the city's routes, so they cannot be hidden in a sticker load or a Spring Cleanup pile.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

West Des Moines collects garbage from single family homes, duplexes, triplexes and four plexes and bills it with water and sewer on the municipal services bill, but Metro Waste Authority runs the disposal side, and that shapes the self haul answer. Anything the cart will not hold goes to the curb with a sticker: one sticker for a bag of trash, a small television, a couch, a desk, a table, up to four kitchen chairs, a toilet part, a window or a twin mattress; two for a queen or king mattress or box spring; and seven for a curbside appliance such as a fridge, freezer, washer, dryer, microwave or water heater, which has to be scheduled by telephone before it is set out. Twice a year the city opens a free scrap appliance and metal drop off at Public Services East on S. 16th Street from 8 AM to noon, taking appliances, metal, computers, printers, DVD players, game systems, cell phones and exercise equipment, but never a television or monitor. Televisions and monitors go free to the Spring Cleanup week in early June, where everything must fit in one standard pickup truck bed and be light enough for two people to lift, or to the curb with a sticker whose count depends on the screen size. The city also runs a free spring tire collection limited to five tires per household with no rims, and household chemicals, cleaners and oils go either to the Metro hazardous waste site in Bondurant, or to the Grimes transfer station by appointment or on the second Saturday of the month from March through November, or to a paid house side bin collection that a resident schedules once the bins are full. Construction material, glass, propane tanks and bagged trash are refused everywhere in the city system, so a project load needs a private hauler. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

TV removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in West Des Moines.

How much does TV removal cost in West Des Moines?

A flat-screen TV under 42 inches is $79 as the first item and $19 as an additional item. Larger flat screens and tube TVs have their own prices. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Choose the type that matches your TV and review your total, including any applicable tax, before payment.

Can I get same-day TV pickup in West Des Moines?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates offered at checkout and have the TV outside according to your confirmation. We text you when your hauler is on the way and provide photos when the pickup is done.

Will Dropcurb remove my TV from the wall or carry it downstairs?

You arrange unmounting, disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Dropcurb starts at an accessible outdoor location, where we load your TV and take it away. If you need help removing a mounted TV or moving a heavy tube TV outside, arrange that separately before your pickup day.

Do you pick up old tube or CRT televisions?

Yes. Choose Tube TV for an older television with curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Its price is $249 as the first item and $249 as an additional item. A rear-projection television is a different item; send a photo before booking rather than choosing the tube-TV option.

Does my old TV have to work?

Your TV does not need to turn on for removal. Choose its type and size and arrange to have it outside before pickup. A non-working TV and a TV with exposed broken glass are different situations; send a photo of unusual damage so we can confirm the plan before you book.

How do West Des Moines large item stickers work?

You buy stickers from the online order form or from a grocery store, hardware store or city hall service desk, attach them to the items, and set the items out on your collection day at least six feet from the garbage cart. The published counts rise with the item: one sticker for a bag of trash or a small television, one sticker for a couch, desk or twin mattress, two for a queen or king mattress or box spring, and seven for a curbside appliance. Appliances also have to be scheduled by telephone before they go out.Official guidance

Where can a West Des Moines television go?

Not to the scrap metal drop-off, because televisions and monitors are refused there. A television is accepted free during the Spring Cleanup week in the first week of June, or at the curb year round with a waste sticker whose count depends on the screen size, and the city and authority pages publish different figures for that sticker, so the count is confirmed with the authority first. Other electronics such as computers, printers, DVD players, game systems and cell phones are free at the scrap metal events, and electronics are also refused at the Grimes hazardous waste site.Official guidance

Who collects trash in West Des Moines?

The city provides collection for single family homes, duplexes, triplexes and four plexes, the account is set up through West Des Moines Water Works, and the charge appears on the monthly municipal services bill. Metro Waste Authority manages the residential disposal side and takes the calls about starting or stopping service, changing a cart and damaged carts, and the city partners with the authority for recycling, yard waste and household hazardous waste as well.Official guidance

How do West Des Moines large item pickups work?

Oversize items go out on the normal collection day with a Metro Waste Authority sticker attached, at least six feet from the garbage cart, and the sticker count rises with the item. One sticker covers a bag of trash, a small television, a couch, a desk, a table, up to four kitchen chairs, a toilet part, a window or a twin mattress; a queen or king mattress or box spring takes two; and a curbside appliance takes seven and has to be scheduled by telephone before it goes out. The alternative is to hold large household items for the free Spring Cleanup week, where everything must fit in one pickup truck bed.Official guidance

What does West Des Moines refuse at the curb?

Spring Cleanup refuses appliances, construction and demolition waste, concrete chunks, asphalt shingles, wooden playsets and fencing, yard waste, bagged or boxed items, windows, mirrors and glass doors, tires, vehicles and major auto parts, propane tanks and hazardous material. Tires, chemicals, paint and waste oil are also refused at the garbage route and at the Grimes hazardous waste site, and the scrap metal events refuse wood, plastics, chemicals, paint, light bulbs, garbage, food and any television or monitor.Official guidance

When is the West Des Moines Spring Cleanup and what goes out?

It runs in a published collection week in early June and is free for households that receive city collection. Furniture such as couches, end tables and mattresses, electronics such as televisions, monitors, fans and lamps, grills with the propane tank removed, and carpet rolled to four feet by eighteen inches are accepted, put out on the normal garbage day no earlier than 5:00 pm the night before and no later than 6:00 am. The whole pile has to fit in the bed of one standard pickup truck and every item must be light enough for two people to lift, or the entire pile is left behind for the resident to dispose of.Official guidance

Where do West Des Moines appliances and televisions go?

Appliances go to the free scrap appliance and metal drop off events at Public Services East between 8 AM and noon on the published dates, or to the curb with a seven sticker set after scheduling the pickup by telephone, with the doors removed from a fridge or freezer. Televisions and monitors are refused at those events, so they go free to Spring Cleanup or to the curb with a sticker whose count depends on the screen size. Other electronics, including computers, printers, DVD players, game systems and cell phones, are on the free drop off list.Official guidance
