Treadmill, walking pad or commercial model?
Household treadmill includes folding home models with a tall console. Choose Walking pad for a compact under-desk model, or Commercial treadmill for a large gym machine. All equipment opens those choices.
An exercise bike, elliptical or rower
Spin, upright, recumbent and air bikes all use Exercise bike, including Peloton and other brands. One elliptical includes its connected base, handles and pedals. Rowing machines and Pilates reformers have their own choices.
Weights, racks and benches
Add together the pounds of loose dumbbells, kettlebells, plates and barbells. Free weights are priced in 10 lb units, rounding the combined weight up. For example, 25 lb uses three units. Add a stand, rack or bench separately if it is going too.

Exercise equipment is not named by the city, the recycling district or the transfer station, so a machine has to be routed by what it is made of. A substantially metal machine fits the district's free scrap metal dumpster, and anything else is a bulky load at the transfer station.
City cost & eligibility
No published list or rate names an exercise machine. Scrap metal is free in the district's dedicated dumpster at its Charlestown office, while the transfer station charges 65 dollars per ton for trash with a one ton minimum and may price bulky items on a different scale. Confirm with the district on (812) 256-7942 or the station on (812) 282-8877 before moving the machine.
When & how
Take a metal machine to the district office during its office hours, or a mixed-material machine to the transfer station during its own hours. There is no city pickup to schedule.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it will come apart, separate the metal frame from plastic covers and electronics so each part goes to the right route, and keep the parts off the curb because the city does not collect them.
The city collects refuse and yard waste, not large items
The Sanitation Department collects single-family residential refuse weekly under Indiana Codes 36-9-2 and 36-9-30 and ordinance 2009-OR-031, with trash at the curb by 6 a.m. on the assigned day. Cans must be on wheels, have hinged lids and be mechanically liftable, and the department sells that type of can for 82 dollars, which it describes as the city's own cost. Bagged trash that is not inside an approved receptacle is not picked up, because crews are not asked to handle loose bags for sharps safety. The Street Department runs chipper, claw and yard waste trucks for limbs, yard waste and brush in residential areas, and both departments publish the same holiday table showing exactly which pickup day each 2026 and 2027 holiday shifts to. Two operational notices matter through the winter: no yard waste or chipper trucks in the weeks following Thanksgiving and Christmas, and no yard waste, chipper or dumpster rentals between November 16 and January 8.
The two self haul routes price material by weight or by item
Because the city publishes no large item collection, the practical routes are the two facilities that do publish rules. The Clark County Recycling District office at 112 Industrial Way in Charlestown takes appliances with metal in them, scrap metal, lead acid batteries, motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline, mineral spirits, propane tanks in small camping or gas grill sizes and toner cartridges free, prices all other electronics at 0.45 per pound, prices paint by the container or the pound, prices tires by size and has suspended refrigerators and items with coolant until its vendor can remove coolant again. The Clark County Transfer and Recycling station at 5321 County Road 403 takes residential loads from any county, prices trash and construction debris at 65 dollars per ton with a one ton minimum and yard waste at 30 dollars per ton, charges 10 dollars per car tire and 30 dollars per refrigerator, states that mattresses, sofas and large furniture are accepted as bulky items on a different fee scale, and refuses chemicals, paint, motor oil, batteries, televisions and electronics, medical waste, asbestos and flammable liquids.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.
Self haul bulky and construction material to the transfer station
A household with furniture, mattresses, construction debris or other bulky material, including addresses that contract their own trash service.

The station publishes trash and construction debris at 65 dollars per ton with a one ton minimum, yard waste at 30 dollars per ton, 10 dollars per load for disposal removal assistance, 10 dollars per car tire, 20 dollars per truck tire, 40 dollars per tractor tire and 30 dollars per refrigerator, and states that bulky items such as mattresses and sofas may be subject to a different fee scale. Arrange it
Drive to 5321 County Road 403 in Charlestown during disposal hours, stop before the scale and wait for the green light, then follow the signs to the drop-off zone for the load.
Chemicals, paint, motor oil, batteries, televisions and electronics, medical waste, asbestos, flammable liquids, railroad ties, propane and fuel tanks, 55 gallon drums and radioactive materials are refused, and a refrigerator is only accepted once a professional has recovered the freon and stickerred the unit.

Residents only and no businesses, by appointment, with a manufacturer's label required on hazardous waste and the right reserved to refuse any material. Alkaline and lithium batteries, acids, corrosives, pool chemicals and oxidizers are not accepted, and refrigerators and items with coolant are suspended until the district's vendor can remove coolant again even though a later section of the same page lists refrigerant items as currently free.
