City cost & eligibility
Furniture is collected inside the out-of-cart service that the monthly solid waste fee already covers, so no per item price is published, and the only published charge in that neighbourhood is the 7 dollar a month fee for an extra garbage cart. When & how
Set the piece out on the weekly out-of-cart collection day by 4 a.m., in a distinct pile away from bagged leaves and bundled brush.
Get it ready
Keep the piece unbagged, keep it inside the three item bulk sub-limit for the week, and keep it clear of the carts so the automated collection is not blocked.
The monthly solid waste fee covers twice-a-week garbage for one cart, once-a-week recycling and once-a-week out-of-cart collection. Carts have to be City-Parish carts carrying the seal and a serial number, the lids have to be closed or the cart is not collected, carts need 3 feet of clearance from anything else, and they go out with the metal bar facing the street and the wheels toward the house. The garbage collection page says carts must be in place by 4 a.m. while the services page says recycling carts must be in place by 5 a.m., so the earlier time is the safe one. Extra garbage carts cost 7 dollars a month each and are billed on the same solid waste, sewer and water bill. Service does not run on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day, and a holiday on a collection day moves service to the next scheduled day unless the city notifies residents otherwise.
Large items go out with the weekly out-of-cart collection
Bulk waste and yard waste share one weekly out-of-cart collection, and the city sorts them for the resident. Bulk waste is defined as items that are hard to containerize in a garbage cart, naming furniture, large household items, mattresses, water heaters, tires, white goods and lawnmowers, and it must not be bagged. Yard waste is bagged leaves and grass with brush and trimmings bundled instead, and the three kinds go in distinct piles. Crews collect at most ten out-of-cart items per collection day and only three of those can be bulk waste or recyclables, so a larger clear-out takes more than one week or a private contractor. Brush, branches and tree trimmings cannot exceed 5 feet in length, 6 inches in diameter or 40 pounds per item, and a separate bulky recyclable stream takes white goods such as stoves, washers and refrigerators plus up to four automobile tires at a time.
