Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Nothing goes to the curb earlier than the day before collection, and items have to sit in front of the household's own property.
A couch, sofa, chair or other large household piece is a bulky item in Lowell, so it leaves on a scheduled pickup with Waste Management rather than with the weekly carts. Usable furniture can also be donated instead of hauled.
Mattresses and box springs became banned from disposal in Massachusetts on November 1, 2022, and Lowell states that they cannot be placed out with normal curbside collection. The route is a scheduled bulky pickup, a donation drop-off, or a private arrangement, rather than the trash cart.
Large appliances are banned from disposal in Massachusetts as white goods, and metals are banned as well, so a refrigerator, freezer, stove, washer or dryer cannot go in the trash cart. The city directs residents to an outside source such as Waste Management or another private hauler.
Exercise equipment is not named in the city's waste material or on the bulky pages, so a treadmill or weight machine has to be confirmed with the hauler before it goes out. A machine is not cart material.
