Somerville has no single bulky item pickup. Instead each kind of large item has its own published route: two pieces of furniture a week with the regular trash, a paid mattress and box spring program scheduled through 311, a paid white goods sticker for large appliances, and weekday drop-off at the DPW yard for electronics and tires. Building material is excluded from curbside service and has to be disposed of privately unless a permit with a green sticker is on display.
The city's regular trash rules collect two pieces of furniture per week, so a couch or chair goes out curbside rather than needing a booked pickup. Glass and mirrors have to be taped, and drawers and doors have to be tied down or removed.
Mattresses and box springs run through a state-mandated recycling program with its own fee and schedule. From February 1, 2026 each piece needs a 55 dollar disposal sticker, the household has to be in a building of six units or fewer with city trash collection, and the pickup has to be booked with 311 in advance.
A large appliance needs a 25 dollar white goods sticker, one per item, bought online, at the DPW offices or at City Hall. Small appliances such as toasters, irons, microwave ovens and coffee makers may go in the regular trash, and the city asks residents to consider taking them to the electronics drop-off instead.
Televisions and computer monitors have a free curbside pickup booked through 311 as well as the DPW Yard drop-off on Franey Road, and the accepted list covers computers and laptops with their keyboard and mouse, televisions and monitors without broken glass, cables, servers and racks, networking equipment, printers, copiers, scanners, telephones and projectors.
Somerville treats building material as private disposal. Toilets, sinks, windows, wood, masonry, siding and shingles must be disposed of privately unless a building permit with the green sticker is on display for a job under 5,000 dollars, and the household hazardous waste events refuse construction waste outright.
The city lists exercise equipment, exercise bikes and metal cabinets among the heavy metal items it does not accept, so a treadmill or weight machine has to be disposed of privately rather than set out for collection.
Tires are accepted at the DPW yard drop-off on weekdays along with yard waste and electronic waste, and they are also on the accepted list at the household hazardous waste events.
The handoff matters
Bins can go curbside after 4 p.m. the day before the scheduled pickup and must be on the curb no later than 7 a.m. on pickup day, with empty barrels removed from the sidewalk by 7 p.m. on collection day. Trash goes in covered barrels, bags stay off the ground although one extra bag may sit on top of a barrel, and collection is delayed one day after observed city holidays. Missed pickup reports have to be filed by 3:30 p.m. the day after the scheduled collection or they will not be accepted. Furniture is handled inside these same rules: the city collects two pieces of furniture per week, with mirrors and glass taped on both sides and drawers and doors tied down or removed so nobody is injured.
