The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Springfield runs its own rubbish collection from the Department of Public Works at 70 Tapley Street: one wheeled cart per household is emptied weekly by an automated arm, the cart goes on the tree belt by 6:30 am on the collection day facing the street, trash outside the cart is not taken without a sticker, and every household must recycle. Bulk items are collected by advance phone appointment only and each one needs a sticker, with mattresses and box springs charged two stickers per unit, so furniture, sofas, appliances, televisions, tires and rugs all move on that route. Extra trash bags need a bag sticker and there is a limit on how many go out in one day, yard waste is collected on alternating weeks from April through December in barrels or paper leaf bags, and the city holds six household hazardous waste days a year by appointment where residents separate paint, solvents, automotive fluids, batteries and other hazardous products from the normal waste stream. Building materials such as asphalt, brick, concrete and wood cannot go in the carts and no residential construction route is published.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress is a bulk item and takes two stickers per unit, with the pickup booked by phone in advance.

City cost & eligibility
$16 per mattress or box spring unit, which is two bulk stickers per unit as of February 4, 2025. Springfield residents and properties that pay the annual city trash fee, with the pickup booked by advance phone request and the stickers bought before the appointment.
When & how
Buy the two stickers, call 311 for a bulk appointment, and set the mattress out for the scheduled collection because bulk items are collected by advance phone request only.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress out of the rubbish cart, keep it dry, and have it out by the scheduled collection time on the appointment day rather than on the regular rubbish day. Put every mattress and box spring in a plastic mattress bag before it goes out, because units that are not properly bagged are not picked up. Bags are sold at Lowe's, Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon and other retailers, and the plastic a new mattress or box spring arrives in can be reused when it is fully sealed with duct tape.

City cost & eligibility
$8 per bulk item sticker for each appliance. Springfield residents and properties that pay the annual city trash fee, with appliances barred from the rubbish cart and the pickup booked by advance phone request.
When & how
Attach one sticker and call 311 for a bulk appointment, and keep the appliance off the regular rubbish day because the carts cannot take it.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, keep it out of the rubbish cart and the recycling cart because the city asks residents not to place appliances in the carts, and take the doors off or secure them before the piece goes out.

City cost & eligibility
Springfield names televisions on the bulk item list and publishes no computer or electronics drop-off, so confirm the route and any charge with the Department of Public Works at 311 or 413-736-3111 before the device leaves the house.
When & how
Call 311 to ask where computers, monitors and other electronics go, and keep them out of the rubbish, recycling and yard waste streams until the route is confirmed.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of the single stream cart because the city refuses non recyclable items there, and clear personal data from every device before handover.

Construction and demolition material

Not on the regular city route

Building materials such as asphalt, brick, concrete and wood cannot go in the carts and no residential construction route is published.

City cost & eligibility
The city asks residents not to put building materials such as asphalt, brick, concrete or wood in the rubbish carts and publishes no residential construction or demolition collection or rate, so a project load moves through a private hauler or container company, and the destination and the price are set by that company.
When & how
Arrange a private hauler or container before the work starts, and keep the material off the curb and out of the carts in the meantime.
Get it ready
Keep asphalt, brick, concrete and wood out of the rubbish cart and the recycling cart, keep the load out of the yard waste route, and keep hazardous products such as solvents, paints and automotive fluids on the household hazardous waste appointment instead.

When & how
Call 311 first, and if the machine is accepted book the bulk appointment and put it out on the scheduled day with the stickers the department asks for.
Get it ready
Break the machine down where you can, keep it out of the rubbish and recycling carts, and remove any battery pack before it goes out.
