Empty cardboard and containers
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.
Furniture and other larger items
Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

A mattress is a bulk item and takes two stickers per unit, with the pickup booked by phone in advance.
City cost & eligibility
$16 per mattress or box spring unit, which is two bulk stickers per unit as of February 4, 2025. Springfield residents and properties that pay the annual city trash fee, with the pickup booked by advance phone request and the stickers bought before the appointment.
When & how
Buy the two stickers, call 311 for a bulk appointment, and set the mattress out for the scheduled collection because bulk items are collected by advance phone request only.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress out of the rubbish cart, keep it dry, and have it out by the scheduled collection time on the appointment day rather than on the regular rubbish day. Put every mattress and box spring in a plastic mattress bag before it goes out, because units that are not properly bagged are not picked up. Bags are sold at Lowe's, Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon and other retailers, and the plastic a new mattress or box spring arrives in can be reused when it is fully sealed with duct tape.
Couches, sofas, chairs, tables, cribs, bed frames and filing cabinets are named bulk items with one sticker each.
City cost & eligibility
$8 per bulk item sticker, which the city charges separately from the annual trash fee. Springfield residents and properties that pay the annual city trash fee, with the pickup booked by advance phone request only.
When & how
Attach one sticker, call 311 for a bulk appointment, and set the furniture out for the scheduled collection rather than on the regular rubbish day.

Get it ready

Televisions are named bulk items with one sticker each and may not go in the rubbish cart.
City cost & eligibility
$8 per bulk item sticker for a television. Springfield residents and properties that pay the annual city trash fee, with televisions barred from the rubbish cart and the pickup booked by advance phone request.

When & how
Call 311 to ask where computers, monitors and other electronics go, and keep them out of the rubbish, recycling and yard waste streams until the route is confirmed.

Building materials such as asphalt, brick, concrete and wood cannot go in the carts and no residential construction route is published.
City cost & eligibility
The city asks residents not to put building materials such as asphalt, brick, concrete or wood in the rubbish carts and publishes no residential construction or demolition collection or rate, so a project load moves through a private hauler or container company, and the destination and the price are set by that company.
When & how
Arrange a private hauler or container before the work starts, and keep the material off the curb and out of the carts in the meantime.
Get it ready
Keep asphalt, brick, concrete and wood out of the rubbish cart and the recycling cart, keep the load out of the yard waste route, and keep hazardous products such as solvents, paints and automotive fluids on the household hazardous waste appointment instead.
Exercise equipment is not named on the bulk item list, so the route has to be confirmed.
City cost & eligibility
The bulk item list names furniture, appliances, televisions, tires and similar pieces and does not list exercise equipment, so call the Department of Public Works at 311 or 413-736-3111 and confirm whether the machine is accepted as a bulk item and how many stickers it needs.
When & how
Call 311 first, and if the machine is accepted book the bulk appointment and put it out on the scheduled day with the stickers the department asks for.
