A sofa bed and a recliner are the published exceptions and are not taken in the bulky set out.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included with curbside collection for a residential structure of up to four units that is in the city program and sets out official City of Taunton pay-as-you-throw bags, limited to one bulky item per week per unit. The regulations note that bulky item stickers may be required later to offset the cost.
When & how
Put the item at the curb on the normal trash day. Trash is collected weekly and recycling every other week on the same day, so the bulky item goes out with the trash.
Get it ready
Keep it to one item for the week, keep sofa beds and recliners out of the pile, and send mattresses, box springs, televisions, computer monitors, white goods and bulk metal to their own routes. An item that is not collected has to leave the curb by 7:00 p.m. on the day after collection or the resident can be fined.
Household trash goes out in official City of Taunton pay-as-you-throw bags, closed or tied and not over 50 pounds, and closed bags may sit inside a plastic or metal barrel of no more than 35 gallons with the loaded barrel also staying under 50 pounds. Barrels need handles or handholds and a top diameter no smaller than the rest of the barrel, and bags may not be tied to the barrel. The city does not sell the bags directly, so residents buy them from the approved retailers in the city, and waste that is not in an official bag is not collected.
One bulky item per week, and the carve-outs are strict
The city collects a single bulky item per week from each residential unit that has a pay-as-you-throw set out, and the item leaves on the normal trash day. A mattress, a box spring, white goods, bulk metal, a television, a computer monitor, a sofa bed and a recliner are all outside that allowance and need one of the other routes, so a pile built from the wrong categories will not be taken.
Recycling runs every other week on the same day as trash
The city is split into an A week and a B week and each half sets recycling out every other week on its normal trash day, which the city publishes in a collection schedule listing the addresses. Recycling is single stream, so paper, cardboard and commingled containers can share the cart, but the material goes in loose and clean rather than in plastic bags, and a cart holding mixed waste and recyclables is not collected. One cart comes free with the service and extra carts are available from the Department of Public Works at 90 Ingell Street.
