Massachusetts banned mattresses and box springs from disposal on November 1, 2022, so Taunton no longer takes either one in the trash or in the bulky pile. The city routes them through its contractor HandUp, which runs a scheduled curbside pickup in Taunton, and the city also accepts them at the Convenience Center on East Britannia.
The handoff matters
Household trash goes out in official City of Taunton pay-as-you-throw bags, closed or tied and not over 50 pounds, and closed bags may sit inside a plastic or metal barrel of no more than 35 gallons with the loaded barrel also staying under 50 pounds. Barrels need handles or handholds and a top diameter no smaller than the rest of the barrel, and bags may not be tied to the barrel. The city does not sell the bags directly, so residents buy them from the approved retailers in the city, and waste that is not in an official bag is not collected.

A mattress, a box spring, white goods, bulk metal, a television, a computer monitor, a sofa bed and a recliner are all outside that allowance and need one of the other routes, so a pile built from the wrong categories will not be taken.

Recycling is single stream, so paper, cardboard and commingled containers can share the cart, but the material goes in loose and clean rather than in plastic bags, and a cart holding mixed waste and recyclables is not collected. One cart comes free with the service and extra carts are available from the Department of Public Works at 90 Ingell Street.

Before you book
Mattress removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Taunton.
The price depends on the mattress size you choose. A queen mattress is $99 as the first item and $30 as an additional item. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Add any box spring or frame separately, then review your total and any applicable tax before payment.
Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates shown at checkout. Have the mattress outside and accessible according to your confirmation. Your booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time, and we text you when your hauler is on the way.
The mattress price covers the mattress only. Add your box spring, bed frame or adjustable base separately if those are going too. Choose the size and type that match each item. The combined price appears before booking.
Dropcurb starts outside. You arrange to move the mattress out of your apartment and down interior stairs before pickup. We load it and take it away from an accessible outdoor spot. Check your building’s access rules before arranging the move outside.
You can choose an offered pickup day around your replacement delivery. First check whether the retailer already includes old-mattress removal, and arrange who will bring it outside if needed. Dropcurb books a pickup day, not the retailer’s delivery window. Contact us before booking if access is limited to a short time.
The Massachusetts disposal ban that took effect on November 1, 2022 keeps mattresses and box springs out of the trash, and the city says it can no longer collect them as bulk waste. The city routes them through its contractor HandUp or through the Convenience Center instead, with a fee charged per unit.Official guidance
The City of Taunton Department of Public Works runs the program with its collection contractor Republic Services, and residents reach the department at 508-821-1431 at 90 Ingell Street. Trash is collected weekly in official city pay-as-you-throw bags, recycling every other week on the same day, and one bulky item per week is allowed from a residential unit that has a bag set out.Official guidance
One item per week from each residential unit that sets out official city pay-as-you-throw bags, and only for buildings of up to four units. A mattress, a box spring, a sofa bed, a recliner, white goods, bulk metal, a television or a computer monitor does not count against that item because none of them is accepted in the bulky pile.Official guidance
They count as two units, and the fee is charged for each one on both the curbside HandUp pickup and the Convenience Center drop-off. The city's mattress FAQ describes an additional disposal fee for a unit that is excessively wet, heavily soiled or visibly moldy or infested on the curbside route, HandUp states it rejects such a unit at pickup, and the Convenience Center does not accept those units, and a scheduled curbside unit that is not set out is charged a no-show fee.Official guidance
Official City of Taunton orange pay-as-you-throw bags, which the city does not sell directly. Approved retailers in the city sell them, and waste left at the curb outside those bags is not collected apart from a permitted bulky item, a scheduled white goods or yard waste collection, and the dumpster service that is part of the municipal contract.Official guidance
It takes mattresses and box springs, televisions and computer monitors, Freon and non-Freon white goods, metal items, tires, batteries, propane tanks, waste oil, clothing and textiles, yard waste and single stream recycling, and it publishes a per-item rate sheet rather than one gate price. Payment is by cash, check, money order or credit card, so confirm the rate for the exact item before loading a vehicle.Official guidance
