Treadmill, walking pad or commercial model?
Household treadmill includes folding home models with a tall console. Choose Walking pad for a compact under-desk model, or Commercial treadmill for a large gym machine. All equipment opens those choices.
An exercise bike, elliptical or rower
Spin, upright, recumbent and air bikes all use Exercise bike, including Peloton and other brands. One elliptical includes its connected base, handles and pedals. Rowing machines and Pilates reformers have their own choices.
Weights, racks and benches
Add together the pounds of loose dumbbells, kettlebells, plates and barbells. Free weights are priced in 10 lb units, rounding the combined weight up. For example, 25 lb uses three units. Add a stand, rack or bench separately if it is going too.

Exercise equipment that will not fit the city cart counts as the weekly bulk item, so one treadmill, bench or machine goes out with the regular trash or the equipment goes to the drop-off center by appointment.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. One bulk item per week at a residential or commercial unit is included in the monthly city solid waste rate, which is billed on the utility account. Anything past the allowance is billed as a solid waste nuisance.
When & how
Collected on your regular trash day by a different truck than the one that empties the cart. Larger loads use the drop-off center by appointment.
Get it ready
Set it beside the cart at the edge of the roadway. Hold anything past one piece for another week, take it to the drop-off center, or use a city dumpster rental for a bigger clean-out.
Out between 4 p.m. the day before and 7 a.m. on collection day
Set trash and bulky items out no sooner than 4 p.m. the day before your regular pickup and no later than 7 a.m. on pickup day. Bring empty containers back in before 8 a.m. the day after collection and store them out of public view, and note that crews do not repeat routes for trash set out late.
Handles face the house and carts sit three feet apart
The city issued 96-gallon cart is the only container crews will empty, and personal cans are not collected. Place the cart away from trees, poles, fire hydrants, mailboxes and parked cars, leave three feet between containers and other items, and keep the lid shut all the way.
The weekly service covers what fits in the cart plus one bulk item or two kitchen-size 13-gallon bags, and the extra piece is collected by a different truck on the same day. Cardboard is not a bulk item and will not be collected outside the cart, even when it is broken down.
There is no collection on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day. When one of them falls on a weekday, pickup for the rest of that week runs one day late and the Friday route runs on Saturday. Other holidays do not change the schedule.

Appliances, tires, automotive parts, building material, scattered refuse and hazardous material are not collected at the curb. Cardboard is not a bulk item, and setting out more than the weekly allowance can be billed as a solid waste nuisance under the city ordinance.
Households with items the curb will not take, including appliances, electronics, tires, scrap metal, building material, extra furniture or a larger load of refuse.

Book through the Drop-Off tab of the ReDirectory at baycityrecycles.org or call 989-894-8312, then bring the load to 2900 N Water Street with exact change and identification. The city asks that you arrive ready to unload your own items.
Staff do not unload for you, so bring help for anything heavy or bulky. Tire and cathode ray tube television acceptance depends on storage or end markets being available, and the drop-off publishes no rate for a load that mixes refuse with building material, so confirm that charge when you book.

Which option covers a Peloton, spin bike or recumbent bike?+
Choose Exercise bike for one stationary bike, including spin, upright, recumbent and air bikes. Peloton and other brands use the same stationary-bike choice. A treadmill, walking pad and outdoor bicycle are different items, so select their matching options.
How do I book free weights, a weight rack or a bench?+
