A couch, recliner or other furniture piece is a bulk item in Bay City, so one piece goes out beside the city cart on the regular trash day or the furniture goes to the drop-off center by appointment for a per piece charge.
City cost & eligibility
From $10 per furniture piece at the Bay City Recycles Drop-Off Center, where a couch is charged per section and a reclining chair is the lowest furniture rate. Appointments are required and city rates need identification proving residency when you arrive. One furniture piece can also use the weekly curbside bulk allowance included in the monthly city solid waste rate.
When & how
The curbside piece is collected on your regular trash day by a different truck than the cart, and the drop-off center is appointment only.
Get it ready
Put the piece beside the cart, not in the street. Sectionals and matching chairs are separate pieces, so anything past the one item weekly allowance is billed as a solid waste nuisance or has to be held or hauled to the center.
Out between 4 p.m. the day before and 7 a.m. on collection day
Set trash and bulky items out no sooner than 4 p.m. the day before your regular pickup and no later than 7 a.m. on pickup day. Bring empty containers back in before 8 a.m. the day after collection and store them out of public view, and note that crews do not repeat routes for trash set out late.
Handles face the house and carts sit three feet apart
The city issued 96-gallon cart is the only container crews will empty, and personal cans are not collected. Place the cart away from trees, poles, fire hydrants, mailboxes and parked cars, leave three feet between containers and other items, and keep the lid shut all the way.
The weekly service covers what fits in the cart plus one bulk item or two kitchen-size 13-gallon bags, and the extra piece is collected by a different truck on the same day. Cardboard is not a bulk item and will not be collected outside the cart, even when it is broken down.
Carpet must be rolled, taped or tied and cut into sections no longer than three feet and no more than eight inches in diameter, with no more than two bundles a week. All trash has to be bagged, and boxes are not accepted as trash containers.
There is no collection on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day. When one of them falls on a weekday, pickup for the rest of that week runs one day late and the Friday route runs on Saturday. Other holidays do not change the schedule.

Staff do not unload for you, so bring help for anything heavy or bulky. Tire and cathode ray tube television acceptance depends on storage or end markets being available, and the drop-off publishes no rate for a load that mixes refuse with building material, so confirm that charge when you book.
