A mattress or box spring counts as the one bulk item a property may set beside the cart each week on the regular trash day. Larger loads and extra pieces go to the Bay City Recycles Drop-Off Center by appointment, where furniture is charged per piece.
City cost & eligibility
$15 per mattress at the Bay City Recycles Drop-Off Center, where a box spring is charged at a lower rate. The drop-off rate needs identification proving residency when you arrive and an appointment booked through the ReDirectory. One piece can also go out with the weekly curbside bulk allowance that is included in the monthly city solid waste rate.
When & how
The curbside piece goes out on your regular trash day and is collected by a different truck than the one that empties the cart. Drop-off visits are appointment only.
Get it ready
Set the mattress beside the cart rather than in the street. Do not put bedding in the city trash cart, and hold extra pieces for another week or take them to the drop-off center, since setting out more than the weekly allowance is billed as a solid waste nuisance.
Out between 4 p.m. the day before and 7 a.m. on collection day
Set trash and bulky items out no sooner than 4 p.m. the day before your regular pickup and no later than 7 a.m. on pickup day. Bring empty containers back in before 8 a.m. the day after collection and store them out of public view, and note that crews do not repeat routes for trash set out late.
Handles face the house and carts sit three feet apart
The city issued 96-gallon cart is the only container crews will empty, and personal cans are not collected. Place the cart away from trees, poles, fire hydrants, mailboxes and parked cars, leave three feet between containers and other items, and keep the lid shut all the way.
The weekly service covers what fits in the cart plus one bulk item or two kitchen-size 13-gallon bags, and the extra piece is collected by a different truck on the same day. Cardboard is not a bulk item and will not be collected outside the cart, even when it is broken down.
There is no collection on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day. When one of them falls on a weekday, pickup for the rest of that week runs one day late and the Friday route runs on Saturday. Other holidays do not change the schedule.

Book through the Drop-Off tab of the ReDirectory at baycityrecycles.org or call 989-894-8312, then bring the load to 2900 N Water Street with exact change and identification. The city asks that you arrive ready to unload your own items.
Staff do not unload for you, so bring help for anything heavy or bulky. Tire and cathode ray tube television acceptance depends on storage or end markets being available, and the drop-off publishes no rate for a load that mixes refuse with building material, so confirm that charge when you book.
