Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Bulk items are collected every week on the regular collection day and the city states that no call in advance is needed. The definition covers a large piece of furniture, bed springs, a mattress or box spring, a refrigerator or freezer with the doors removed, a stove and similar items incidental to housekeeping, so most of what fills a garage goes out with the ordinary collection.
Furniture is named first in the city's bulk item definition, so a couch, dresser or chair is an ordinary weekly set-out rather than a booked appointment, and the page lists furniture again as an accepted item.
A mattress or box spring is inside the bulk item definition and appears again on the accepted list, so bedding goes out with the weekly collection. The one condition the city adds is that a mattress or box spring infested with bed bugs must be wrapped in plastic.
Appliances are on the accepted list and a refrigerator or freezer is named directly in the bulk item definition, with the doors removed before set-out. Air conditioners, dehumidifiers, furnaces, compressors, generators and other large household appliances are also accepted as ordinary items.
Electronics are accepted in the curbside waste stream, with televisions, computer equipment, copy machines, cell phones and electronics with their cords on the accepted list. Used computer equipment including central processing units, monitors, keyboards, mice, modems and printers is also accepted at the city's hazardous waste drop-off day.
Treadmills are named on the city's accepted item list, which makes exercise equipment an ordinary weekly item here rather than a special case, alongside a porch swing, a pool table and similar household pieces.
The handoff matters
Farmington Hills collects mixed waste, recyclables, compost material and bulk items once a week from single family residences, and the city states that a bulk item does not need a call in advance. Bulk items are defined as a large piece of furniture, bed springs, a mattress or box spring, a refrigerator or freezer with the doors removed, a stove and other such items incidental to housekeeping. Cans, bags and bundles go to the curb no earlier than 6:00 PM the day before collection and all containers come off the curb within 12 hours of collection, with pickup between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM and everything out by 7:00 AM because times vary from week to week. Mixed waste containers must be between 10 and 35 gallons with a combined weight of no more than 60 pounds, and plastic bags between 10 and 30 gallons at least 2 mil thick with no more than 40 pounds inside, while cardboard boxes are not acceptable containers.

Pianos, riding lawnmowers, logs over six inches in diameter, asbestos, asphalt, drums, hot ashes, kilns, metal pressure tanks, ironing boards, rocks and boulders are also refused.
