Appliances need a city bulk sticker at the curb, with the doors taken off a refrigerator or freezer, while the county recycles appliances and charges for any unit holding refrigerant.
City cost & eligibility
$40 per appliance collected at the curb through a City bulk sticker or the online bulk item form, with the county charging a separate per unit fee for any appliance that holds refrigerant. Grand Rapids residential addresses with city refuse service, or Kent County residents delivering to the North Kent or South Kent center, where all food and debris must be removed before an appliance is accepted.
When & how
For the curb, put the appliance out with a sticker attached on the service day, or pay online and set it out by 7 a.m. the next business day. For the county, drop it at Rockford or Byron Center during opening hours, and at Rockford on a Friday morning for the household hazardous waste window.
Get it ready
Remove the doors from a refrigerator or freezer before collection, empty and clean the unit, take out loose cords and food, and keep appliances out of the refuse and recycling carts because Michigan prohibits them from the landfill and the waste-to-energy facility.
Out by 7 a.m. and back off the curb the next morning
Carts go to the curb with the lid arrows facing the street by 7 a.m. on the collection day and stay at least three feet from poles, cars, hydrants and other carts. Nothing goes out before 7 p.m. the day before, and carts have to be off the curb by 7 a.m. the day after collection. A cart set out late draws a return fee, and a cart blocked by a vehicle or left on a sidewalk may not be serviced at all.
Sticker items stay at the curb until the truck comes
Furniture, mattresses, box springs, appliances and large household fixtures sit at the curb until the bulky collection reaches them, so the sticker has to stay attached and visible to the driver and the piece has to be placed where the truck can reach it. Items left out without a sticker are not collected and the property owner may receive a violation, and any one item is limited to six feet by five feet.
Prepare restricted items before they leave the house
Televisions of any kind are refused at the curb and go to a Kent County electronics drop-off instead, appliances holding refrigerant are accepted for recycling with the fee paid at the county scale, refrigerators and freezers lose their doors first, household chemicals and paint wait for a SafeChem collection window, and yard waste, wood, boards and construction material never go inside a city cart or a blue city bag.

$40 per bulky item, charged as a City bulk sticker attached to the item or as the same collection paid through the online bulk item form. Grand Rapids residential addresses with city refuse service at properties of up to eight units, with one sticker for each item, one sticker for a mattress and box spring together, one per sectional couch section and a six feet by five feet limit on any single item.
Arrange it
Buy the sticker at the City Hall customer service storefront on the M level of 300 Monroe Ave NW or at a participating supermarket or neighborhood store and attach it to the item, or pay through the online bulk item form and put the items at the curb by 7 a.m. the following business day.
Televisions of any kind, hazardous waste and tires are not collected at the curb, an item left out without a sticker is not picked up and can lead to a violation, and the item stays at the curb until the bulky collection arrives.
Use a retailer or reuse outlet for electronics, appliances and furniture
A household that would rather trade an item in, donate it or hand it to a retailer than drive to a county center.
Cost & conditions
The county's community resource lists publish no single rate: some outlets take electronics at no cost and others charge by item, and Best Buy, Office Depot OfficeMax and the recyclers each set their own price, so the amount has to be confirmed with the outlet before the trip.

The county lists Best Buy at 3410 Alpine Avenue NW, Comprenew, In The Image at 4255 Kalamazoo Avenue SE, Office Depot OfficeMax, Padnos, Valley City Electronic Recycling at 2929 32nd Street SE, Goodwill and Habitat for Humanity as outlets that may take electronics, appliances, furniture and building material, so call the outlet with the exact item first.
Some of these outlets charge for what they take, Goodwill accepts working flat screen televisions but no box-style sets, In The Image takes televisions only up to 42 inches that are cable ready with audio inputs, and working items should be donated or given away before they are scrapped.

Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?+
Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.
What has to happen before an old refrigerator goes out?+
The doors come off first, because the city requires refrigerator and freezer doors removed before collection. The unit then goes to the curb with a bulk sticker, or through the online bulk form, as a bulky appliance. Can I pay for a bulky pickup online in Grand Rapids?+
Yes. The city's online bulk item form covers the same collection as a bulk sticker, so nothing has to be bought in advance or attached to the item. The items then have to be at the curb by 7 a.m. the next business day and stay there until they are collected, which the city aims to complete within three to five business days and generally within a week of the payment.
