When & how

Get it ready
Empty and clean a unit before it leaves the house, and leave sealed compressors, refrigerant lines and anything holding oil or gas to a yard that handles them. A refrigerator, freezer, dehumidifier or air conditioner is handled on the cooling page instead, because the curbside program refuses it unless a licensed facility has removed the refrigerant and tagged the unit.
Sealed cooling appliances are the exception here. The curbside program refuses any unit that still holds Freon, the county hazard center refuses them outright, and a local scrap yard recovers refrigerant from units brought to its yard.

When & how
Kalamazoo Metal Recyclers takes material Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is closed Sunday. The city will only collect a cooling appliance at the curb or the drop-off day when a licensed facility has removed the refrigerant and tagged the unit.
Get it ready
Do not cut refrigerant lines or drain a compressor yourself. Keep the door on the unit until it is collected, and have the removal tag or the signed recovery statement ready when you arrive at the yard.
Place bulk items at the curb starting at 7 a.m. the day before your collection and have everything out by 6 a.m. on the collection day, because the city treats an early or late pile as a nuisance. Anything the crew does not take has to be off the curb within two days after the pickup in your area, and a missed bulk pickup should be reported to 311 or (269) 337-8000 within 48 hours.
Keep the pile visible, loose and inside the load limit
Put material in open boxes or clear bags so the contents can be identified, never in black or opaque bags, and do not leave a loose pile of junk. Each collection is limited to 7.5 cubic yards, which is about a pickup truck load. Cut carpet into 4 x 4 foot squares and roll it, cut fencing into 4 x 4 foot sections, and deface, bag and label anything infested with bedbugs or cockroaches.
Keep tires, liquids and hazardous material out of the pile
A bulk trash pile will not take tires, large auto parts, paint cans or other containers of liquid, rocks, sand, glass, concrete, yard waste, household trash, recyclables, EPS foam, electronics, or a cooling appliance that still holds Freon. Hazardous material belongs at the county center on Lamont Avenue, and the drop-off day takes tires only when they are cut into flat pieces.
