Mattresses are named on the city's accepted bulk trash list and on the free drop-off day list, so a city household has two routes that cost nothing extra.

When & how
Use the March, June, September or December bulk trash day for your address, or one of the published drop-off dates at Republic Services, which include September 30 and October 3, 2026.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress out of the recycling cart and out of a black bag, and set it out only inside the bulk trash window. A mattress has to stay within the 7.5 cubic yard load limit, and the city asks residents to consider reuse first because bulk trash goes straight to a landfill.
Place bulk items at the curb starting at 7 a.m. the day before your collection and have everything out by 6 a.m. on the collection day, because the city treats an early or late pile as a nuisance. Anything the crew does not take has to be off the curb within two days after the pickup in your area, and a missed bulk pickup should be reported to 311 or (269) 337-8000 within 48 hours.
Keep the pile visible, loose and inside the load limit
Put material in open boxes or clear bags so the contents can be identified, never in black or opaque bags, and do not leave a loose pile of junk. Each collection is limited to 7.5 cubic yards, which is about a pickup truck load. Cut carpet into 4 x 4 foot squares and roll it, cut fencing into 4 x 4 foot sections, and deface, bag and label anything infested with bedbugs or cockroaches.
