The local disposal guide
Kalamazoo pays for curbside recycling, quarterly bulk trash and seasonal yard waste out of its Solid Waste Millage, so those programs cost a city household nothing extra. Regular household trash is not a city service and has to be arranged privately. Anything the curb refuses has a route nearby: free bulk trash drop-off days at Republic Services on Gembrit Circle, the county hazardous waste center on Lamont Avenue, and the scrap and transfer yards on King Highway and Ravine Road.

Kalamazoo collects couches, damaged furniture and other large household goods at the curb four times a year, and city residents can also bring the same items to a free drop-off day at Republic Services.
Mattresses are named on the city's accepted bulk trash list and on the free drop-off day list, so a city household has two routes that cost nothing extra.
A broken appliance without refrigerant goes out with the city's bulk trash or to the free drop-off day, and the metal yards on King Highway and Glendenning Road buy appliances, microwaves, tools and wiring.
Sealed cooling appliances are the exception here. The curbside program refuses any unit that still holds Freon, the county hazard center refuses them outright, and a local scrap yard recovers refrigerant from units brought to its yard.
Electronics stay out of the curbside recycling cart and out of a bulk trash pile. Kalamazoo County households can take televisions, monitors, computers and cords to the hazard center free, and the city adds Saturday drop-off events for anything that has to wait for a weekend.
The curbside bulk trash list refuses construction and renovation material. The drop-off day page names a narrower set of building items, and larger loads belong at a transfer station that charges for the material.
No Kalamazoo program names a treadmill, elliptical or weight machine. A bulky machine reads as a large household item, and a metal-heavy frame is scrap that a local yard will buy.
The handoff matters
Place bulk items at the curb starting at 7 a.m. the day before your collection and have everything out by 6 a.m. on the collection day, because the city treats an early or late pile as a nuisance. Anything the crew does not take has to be off the curb within two days after the pickup in your area, and a missed bulk pickup should be reported to 311 or (269) 337-8000 within 48 hours.
Curbside bulk trash program, accepted items and set-out rulesView from the Curb fall and winter 2026 guidePut material in open boxes or clear bags so the contents can be identified, never in black or opaque bags, and do not leave a loose pile of junk. Each collection is limited to 7.5 cubic yards, which is about a pickup truck load. Cut carpet into 4 x 4 foot squares and roll it, cut fencing into 4 x 4 foot sections, and deface, bag and label anything infested with bedbugs or cockroaches.
Curbside bulk trash program, accepted items and set-out rulesView from the Curb fall and winter 2026 guideA bulk trash pile will not take tires, large auto parts, paint cans or other containers of liquid, rocks, sand, glass, concrete, yard waste, household trash, recyclables, EPS foam, electronics, or a cooling appliance that still holds Freon. Hazardous material belongs at the county center on Lamont Avenue, and the drop-off day takes tires only when they are cut into flat pieces.

Couches and other large household items go out with the quarterly curbside bulk trash collection, and city residents can bring the same items to Republic Services free on the published drop-off days with proof of residency. Downtown addresses and buildings with five or more units do not get curbside bulk pickup, so those households use the drop-off day.Official guidance
Mattresses and box springs are on the accepted list for the quarterly curbside bulk trash collection, and the free drop-off days at Republic Services take the same material with proof of city residency. Neither route needs a request, but each load is limited to 7.5 cubic yards.Official guidance
The city collects one with bulk trash only if a licensed facility removed the refrigerant and tagged the unit, and the county household hazardous waste center does not take refrigerators, air conditioners or dehumidifiers at all. Kalamazoo Metal Recyclers on King Highway recovers refrigerant from appliances brought to its yard, and the county list also sends residents to Ted's Appliance, where you should call for fees.Official guidance
Not in the recycling cart and not in a bulk trash pile. A Kalamazoo County household can take televisions, monitors, computers, printers and cords to the Household Hazardous Waste Center on Lamont Avenue free of charge, and the city's Saturday drop-off events at Mayors' Riverfront Park accept electronics with a processing fee for CRT and LCD screens.Official guidance
The city's Department of Public Services runs curbside recycling, quarterly bulk trash, monthly yard waste and the fall leaf program, and the Solid Waste Millage pays for them instead of a per-pickup charge. Regular household trash is not a city service and has to be arranged privately. Bulk trash days are assigned by address, so check the city collection lookup or call 311.Official guidance
