The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Lansing collects trash, recycling and seasonal yard waste through CART, the City's own refuse service. Recycling and yard waste are covered by an annual fee assessed on the winter property tax bill, while trash service and bulky item pickups are paid separately. Couches, mattresses, box springs, appliances, large electronics and other household items that do not fit in the blue trash cart with the lid closed are collected as bulk items on Thursdays by request, at a published rate for the first item and each additional item. Material the City will not take can be self-hauled to the disposal center on Wood Road or donated when it is still resaleable.

City cost & eligibility

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Treadmills, exercise bikes and home gyms are not named in the City's bulk examples, so check the item with the CART office before requesting a pickup.

City cost & eligibility
Exercise equipment is not listed among the City's bulk examples. Once an item is accepted as household bulk it follows the published per-item rates, but confirm that it qualifies before you pay, or ask the CART office how it should be disposed of.
When & how
Email the CART office before you file the request so a machine that is not eligible does not sit uncollected at the curb.
Get it ready
If the item is accepted, treat it as one bulk item, have it at the curb on the scheduled Thursday, and note that anything smaller than the City's bulk definition belongs with your regular trash service instead.

Construction and remodel material

Special rules apply

Construction, demolition and remodel material is not part of the City's household bulk list, so plan a self-haul route or a donation for usable building material.

City cost & eligibility
The City describes bulk items as household objects too large for the trash cart and does not list construction or demolition material, so confirm with the CART office before setting anything out. The disposal center publishes $31.66 per cubic yard for construction waste such as lumber, carpeting, drywall, shingles and plywood, and reusable building materials can be donated to the ReStore instead.
When & how
Line up the disposal route before the work starts, either a self-haul trip to the disposal center during its posted hours or a scheduled donation pickup for material that is still usable.
Get it ready
Separate anything that can be reused, such as doors, cabinets, hardware and unused flooring, and keep it clean for donation. Material that is glued, broken, mouldy or contaminated is not resaleable.

Other bulky household items

Special rules apply

Anything too large for the blue trash cart with the lid closed, and likely over 30 pounds or 4 feet long, is a bulk item that the City collects on Thursdays by request.

When & how
Measure the item against the City's definition, request the pickup, pay from the emailed instructions, and have it at the curb on the scheduled Thursday.
Get it ready
Count each item separately because the additional-item rate applies to everything after the first. Keep yard waste and recyclables out of the bulk request, since the City runs those as separate CART collections.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Bulk collection runs on Thursdays

Bulk items are only picked up on Thursdays, and only after the pickup is requested and paid for. If the item is not at the curb on the Thursday the work order names, it may have to wait until the following Thursday.

Bulk item definition, Thursday pickup, request form and rates

Pay before it is scheduled

Nothing is scheduled until the payment is made. After the bulk item form is submitted, watch for the email with the payment and pickup instructions, then pay online, by mailed check, in person at the Treasurer's Office in City Hall, or on the automated phone line.

Bulk item definition, Thursday pickup, request form and rates

Mind the set-out window

The City's ordinance puts containers in the right-of-way no earlier than 4:00 p.m. the day before collection and expects them back off the right-of-way by 7:00 a.m. the day after. Plan a bulk item for the same Thursday window rather than leaving it at the curb all week, because left-out material can draw a fine.
