The local disposal guide
Duluth does not collect household trash or recycling from the curb. The city's own waste page sends residents to their waste hauler for curbside recycling, and most haulers in the region offer single stream service, while the regional authority sets a short list of items that residents have to keep separated for recycling. Everything bulky or awkward is a drop-off at one of three sites run by the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District, which now brands itself as Resource Renew. The Materials Recovery Center on Ridgeview Road is the one that matters for furniture, mattresses, appliances, electronics, construction debris, tires and household junk, and it is self service, so the visitor unloads and the fee is calculated at the gatehouse on the way in. Household chemicals go to a separate facility on Courtland Street, which takes them free from Minnesota households, and the yard waste compost site on the same street charges by the yard for brush, dirt and sod while taking leaves and grass at no charge.

The Materials Recovery Center takes electronics and prices them by device and by screen size. Small electronics and rechargeable batteries are free, most working devices carry a small per item fee, and televisions and monitors climb in three steps as the screen gets larger.
Construction and demolition material is accepted at the Materials Recovery Center rather than refused. Mixed loads such as lumber, brick, concrete, plastic sheeting and shingles are priced at the mixed waste rate, clean concrete is taken without rebar or embedded material, and pallets and clean wood carry their own lower per yard rate.
Exercise equipment is not named on the Materials Recovery Center price list, so a treadmill or weight machine is a question for the gatehouse. The site takes scrap metal free and small electric appliances free, and it prices mixed waste by the cubic yard, so most machines should have a route, but which one applies is decided on arrival.

Yard waste has its own site and its own split price list. Leaves, grass clippings and house and garden plants are free to drop off at the Yard Waste Compost Site on Courtland Street, while brush and logs are charged by the yard and dirt and sod are charged by the yard with a three yard limit. Minnesota law has banned yard waste from the garbage since 1990.
Household chemicals are free to drop off at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility on Courtland Street, and the regional authority describes the service as free disposal for Minnesota households. The accepted list covers paint and paint products, batteries of every type including single use alkaline, automotive fluids and filters, cleaners and degreasers, weed killers and pesticides, fluorescent bulbs and medical sharps.
The handoff matters
The city does not collect household trash or recycling, and it publishes no curbside large item pickup. Residents contract a waste hauler, and most haulers in the region offer single stream recycling, so all recyclables can go in one bin with no separation. The regional authority still requires residents to keep aluminum, steel and tin containers, glass containers, magazines, newspaper, plastic containers, paper and corrugated cardboard separated for recycling within that stream.
