The Materials Recovery Center takes electronics and prices them by device and by screen size. Small electronics and rechargeable batteries are free, most working devices carry a small per item fee, and televisions and monitors climb in three steps as the screen gets larger.
City cost & eligibility
From $2 for an item at the Materials Recovery Center, where small electronics and rechargeable batteries are free and the per item fees are $2 for a CPU, fax machine, printer, laptop, VCR, DVD or DVR player, tablet or automatic external defibrillator, $9 for a television or monitor 19 inches and smaller, $12 for a screen over 19 inches up to 40 inches, and $15 for a screen over 40 inches. Any household delivering its own electronics during Materials Recovery Center hours, with cash, check, Visa, Mastercard or Discover accepted; a business limit of five items a day applies and electronics retailers or repair centres are not eligible for that service.
When & how
Take the devices to the Materials Recovery Center at 4587 Ridgeview Rd., open Wednesday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closed Sunday through Tuesday, and check in at the gatehouse so the load can be assessed.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data from any computer, laptop, tablet or phone before handover. Separate the rechargeable batteries, which are free, from the devices that carry a fee, keep electronics out of the household garbage stream the centre refuses, and note that the centre does not take leaves or yard waste, so a mixed load has to be sorted before it arrives.
The city does not collect household trash or recycling, and it publishes no curbside large item pickup. Residents contract a waste hauler, and most haulers in the region offer single stream recycling, so all recyclables can go in one bin with no separation. The regional authority still requires residents to keep aluminum, steel and tin containers, glass containers, magazines, newspaper, plastic containers, paper and corrugated cardboard separated for recycling within that stream.
The Materials Recovery Center on Ridgeview Road is the site for furniture, household junk, construction debris, mattresses, appliances, electronics, tires, scrap metal and recyclables. The Household Hazardous Waste Facility on Courtland Street takes paint, chemicals, batteries, bulbs and sharps free from Minnesota households. The Yard Waste Compost Site on the same Courtland Street site takes leaves, grass and garden plants free and charges by the yard for brush, logs, dirt and sod.
The Materials Recovery Center is self service, so the household unloads its own material. Visitors stop first at the gatehouse, where staff assess each load and calculate the fee, and then drive to the appropriate station for recycling, reuse or disposal. The Reuse Area opens only to people who have items to drop off, and it closes thirty minutes before the centre itself closes.

Arrange it
Drive to 4587 Ridgeview Rd. on a Wednesday through Saturday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., stop at the gatehouse to have the load assessed and priced, then unload at the stations for each stream. The site is closed Sunday through Tuesday and on the listed holidays.
The site does not accept household garbage, household hazardous waste, or leaves and yard waste material, and the household does the unloading because the centre is self service. Business customers face separate pricing and daily limits, and appliance and electronics retailers or repair centres are not eligible for those residential services.
