The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Lakeville licenses private haulers rather than collecting waste itself, so a household chooses one of the five licensed residential haulers, and recycling and compost ride on the same day as the trash. The city sets two collection areas, the east side on Wednesday and Thursday and the west side on Tuesday and Wednesday, and every hauler in Dakota County must accept the county's designated recycling list. Anything the cart will not take goes through Dakota County: usable furniture and mattresses first, because they can be given away through the county Reuse Map or a reuse event, and then a hauler large item pickup or a transfer station. The county Recycling Zone in Eagan takes household chemicals, electronics and small household items, charges ten dollars for a television or monitor and nothing for the rest of the electronics, and refuses appliances, dehumidifiers, water heaters, furniture, mattresses and box springs, exercise equipment, wood products and lumber, and yard waste. A second county drop-off is under construction and is expected to open in spring 2027.

Licensed haulers and the two collection areas

Accepted with preparation

Lakeville licenses five residential haulers and does not run a collection crew, and recycling and compost are collected on the same day as the trash.

City cost & eligibility
Each licensed hauler sets its own subscription price and the city publishes none, so confirm the rate, the bin sizes and the collection day with the hauler chosen for the address.
When & how
The east side of the city is collected Wednesday and Thursday and the west side is Tuesday and Wednesday, and the hauler confirms the day for the address. Haulers deliver the bins to new customers.
Get it ready
Place recyclables loose in the cart or in a paper bag and never in a plastic bag, keep containers empty and dry, leave the caps on and flatten boxes. Batteries, food and liquids, paper plates and cups, napkins, plastic bags and wrap, shredded paper, Styrofoam, tanglers such as chains, extension cords, hoses and string lights, and trash never belong in the recycling cart.

Large items and clean-out loads

Special rules apply

The city publishes no bulky item programme, so a large load moves through the county's published options: a one-time pickup from the hauler, a transfer station or landfill, a temporary dumpster or a Bagster.

City cost & eligibility
No city rate applies and each route sets its own price, so confirm the charge with the hauler or with the receiving site before the item leaves the property.
When & how
Call the hauler to book a one-time large item pickup, or call the transfer station for its hours and rates. Check the county Reuse Map and the community reuse events first, because usable items can be passed on instead of thrown away.
Get it ready
Separate anything still usable from the waste and keep the load to what the receiving site confirms it takes. Appliances, dehumidifiers, water heaters, water softeners, furniture, mattresses and box springs, exercise equipment, wood products or lumber and yard waste are all refused at the county Recycling Zone, so plan a different route for those.

Couches and household furniture

Special rules apply

Furniture is refused at the county Recycling Zone, so the published route is reuse first and then a hauler pickup or a self-haul load to a transfer station.

City cost & eligibility
The county publishes no furniture rate and the city sets none, so confirm the hauler's one-time pickup price or the transfer station's gate charge before the piece moves.
When & how
Check the county Reuse Map or a community reuse event first, then book the hauler pickup or call the transfer station to arrange the drop-off.
Get it ready
Clean the piece and keep it dry so a reuse outlet can take it, and keep it out of the recycling cart and away from the Recycling Zone, which refuses furniture. If the piece is finished, cover or secure the load before the drive.

Mattresses and box springs

Special rules apply

Mattresses and box springs are on the county Recycling Zone refusal list, so the published routes are reuse and donation first and then a hauler large item pickup or a transfer station.

City cost & eligibility
No mattress price is published by the city or the county, so confirm the hauler's pickup charge or the transfer station's gate fee before the mattress leaves the property.
When & how
Offer the mattress for reuse if it is clean, then book the hauler pickup or call a transfer station from the county list for its hours and terms.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and off the street until the pickup or the trip, and keep it out of the recycling cart and away from the Recycling Zone, which names mattresses and box springs among the items it does not accept.

Appliances and white goods

Special rules apply

The county Recycling Zone refuses appliances and names dehumidifiers, water heaters and water softeners as well, so an appliance goes out with a hauler pickup or a self-haul trip.

City cost & eligibility
No appliance rate is published, so confirm the hauler's large item charge or the transfer station's gate fee before the unit is moved, and ask whether a refrigerant unit carries a separate charge.
When & how
Book the hauler pickup or call a transfer station or landfill from the county list, which asks residents to call for fees, hours and accepted items.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and secure the doors, and keep the appliance out of the Recycling Zone load because that site refuses appliances, dehumidifiers, water heaters and water softeners. Leave any refrigerant recovery to the receiving operation and ask about it when booking.

Computers and small household electronics

Accepted with preparation

The county Recycling Zone takes household electronics and destroys the data to U.S. Department of Defense standards, and everything except a television or monitor is accepted at no charge.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free for residents of Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington counties, apart from televisions and monitors, which carry their own fee.
When & how
Take the devices to the Recycling Zone at 3365 Dodd Road in Eagan on Wednesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday noon to 8 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and check the holiday closures before a trip.
Get it ready
If batteries can be removed, take them out of the devices and bring them in a separate bag or container, and leave the device whole for handover. Stay in the vehicle, put the items in the trunk or very back, label the containers and have identification ready because staff scan the licence.
Dakota County Recycling Zone hours, fees, accepted and refused material

Televisions and monitors

Accepted with preparation

Televisions and monitors are accepted at the county Recycling Zone, and they are the two electronic items that carry a fee.

City cost & eligibility
$10 each television or monitor at the Dakota County Recycling Zone. Open to residents of Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington counties. Bring a credit card or exact change because the television, monitor and tire fees are paid at the site.
When & how
Take the screen to 3365 Dodd Road in Eagan during the published hours, and note that the site is closed on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Get it ready
Keep the screen whole and out of the recycling cart, take out any batteries that can be removed and bring them in a separate bag or container, and hand the item over from the vehicle. A television that is still too heavy to lift alone can go with a hauler load instead, because the site asks residents to stay in the car while staff unload.
Dakota County Recycling Zone hours, fees, accepted and refused material

Construction and demolition debris

Special rules apply

Wood products and lumber are refused at the county Recycling Zone, so project material goes to a transfer station or landfill from the county list, on a call first basis.

City cost & eligibility
The county list says to call for fees, hours and items accepted, and one landfill publishes a one ton minimum charge, so confirm the gate price and the accepted load before hauling.
When & how
Call the receiving site first, then haul the load on a weekday, since the list gives phone numbers rather than opening hours.
Get it ready
Keep wood products, lumber and yard waste out of the Recycling Zone load because that site refuses them, separate clean material from mixed debris so the receiving site can price the load, and keep hazardous material out entirely because it belongs at the Recycling Zone.
Reuse options, large item routes and the transfer station and landfill listDakota County Recycling Zone hours, fees, accepted and refused material

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is on the county Recycling Zone refusal list, so a machine has to go out with a hauler pickup or a self-haul load.

City cost & eligibility
No exercise equipment price is published, so confirm the hauler's large item charge or the receiving site's gate fee before the machine is moved.
When & how
Book the hauler pickup or call a transfer station from the county list, and check the reuse options first if the machine still works.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it will come apart and keep the loose weights with it, and remove any battery pack so it can go to the electronics counter separately. Keep the machine out of the Recycling Zone load because that site names exercise equipment among the items it does not accept.

Curbside recycling and drop-off sites

Accepted with preparation

Curbside single stream recycling runs on the trash day, and the county also lists drop-off sites for recyclables that do not fit in the cart.

City cost & eligibility
Curbside recycling is part of the hauler subscription, which the city does not price, and the drop-off sites set their own terms, so confirm the charge with the hauler or the site.
When & how
Put the cart out on the collection day the hauler confirms, or use a drop-off site for material that does not fit.
Get it ready
Follow the county recycling list and keep plastic bags, food, shredded paper, Styrofoam, tanglers and trash out of the cart, because Dakota County requires every hauler to accept the designated list and contamination can spoil the load.

What a trip to the county Recycling Zone looks like

The Recycling Zone at 3365 Dodd Road in Eagan opens Wednesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday noon to 8 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it is closed on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Stay in the vehicle while staff unload, put everything except sharps in the trunk or very back, keep the sharps container in the front seat, label containers and carry them upright in a box that can be left behind, and bring identification plus a credit card or exact change for the television, monitor and tire fees.

Dakota County Recycling Zone hours, fees, accepted and refused material

Yard waste never goes in the trash

Yard waste such as grass clippings, leaves, twigs and branches may not go in the trash. Compost it at home, schedule a yard waste pickup with the hauler, or take it to a county drop-off site, using a container that can be emptied and taken home, a paper bag or a BPI-certified compostable bag, and never a plastic bag. The county asks residents to call each site first for fees, hours and accepted items, and the city also runs a food scraps drop site at the Water Treatment Facility on Ipava Avenue that requires registration with the county.

Cost & conditions

Arrange it
Use the county Reuse Map to find a repair option or a place to pass the item on, and check the community reuse events for drop-off days.

Reuse depends on condition and on what each listing will take, so a worn or damaged piece still has to go through the hauler or a transfer station.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self haul in Lakeville starts with the county rather than the city, because the city licenses private haulers and runs no drop-off of its own. Dakota County's Recycling Zone at 3365 Dodd Road in Eagan takes household chemicals and hazardous waste and household electronics on Wednesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday noon to 8 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it charges for a television or monitor and for tires, with every other item free for residents of the seven participating counties. Data is destroyed to U.S. Department of Defense standards. That site refuses appliances, dehumidifiers, water heaters, water softeners, furniture, mattresses and box springs, exercise equipment, wood products or lumber and yard waste. Those streams go instead to a hauler large item pickup or to a transfer station or landfill from the county list, which names Burnsville Landfill and Burnsville Demolition Landfill at 2650 Cliff Road W., Dakota Area Transfer in Rosemount, Freeway Transfer Station on West Black Dog Road, Lloyd's Construction Services Coates Transfer in Rosemount, Pine Bend Landfill with a one ton minimum charge, and Republic Services in Burnsville, and asks residents to call for fees, hours and items accepted. Start with reuse and then use one of the county's published routes. Call your hauler for a one-time large item pickup, bring the item to a transfer station or landfill, order a temporary dumpster, or use a Bagster from a home improvement store. The county also runs a Reuse Map and community reuse events for items in good condition, and the transfer station list says to call for fees, hours and accepted items.Official guidance

Where does a mattress go in Lakeville?

The county Recycling Zone does not accept mattresses or box springs, so use the reuse route if the mattress is clean and then arrange a one-time large item pickup with your hauler or take it to a transfer station or landfill from the county list, calling first for the fees and the accepted items.Official guidance

How do I get rid of an appliance in Lakeville?
