The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Bloomington runs its own citywide garbage, recycling and organics program and bills it on the residential utility bill, so most large-item routes start with the city rather than with a hauler you choose. Households with city service can schedule one monthly bulky reuse and recycling pickup at no separate charge, the city holds one annual recycling drop-off event with published per-item prices, and Hennepin County runs a permanent drop-off facility inside Bloomington for electronics, appliances, tires and hazardous waste.

Couches and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Couches, chairs, tables, shelves, bed frames and rugs in dry, good condition can go out with the monthly bulky pickup, and unusable furniture is collected at the curb during the even-year Curbside Cleanup. The annual recycling drop-off event does not take furniture.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. For households with City of Bloomington garbage and recycling service. The monthly pickup carries no separate charge because it is included in the monthly Bulky Item Management Fee on the residential utility bill. Curbside Cleanup is part of the same program in even years, and the annual drop-off event refuses furniture.
When & how
Schedule with Better Futures Minnesota by 4 p.m. at least two business days before your pickup day by calling 612-353-5400 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or booking online. Items are collected the first full week of each month on your regular garbage and recycling day, and everything must be at the curb by 7 a.m.
Get it ready
Keep the item dry, because wet items are not collected, and cover it with a tarp when rain or snow is expected. Furniture must be free of rips, stains, scratches, strong odors and pet hair. Reclining or powered seating, glass topped tables and shelves, entertainment centers built for tube televisions, and headboards, footboards or wooden bed rails are not accepted.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

Mattresses and box springs go out with the monthly bulky pickup when they are dry and free of bugs, and the city sends them to reuse or recycling. The annual drop-off event prices them per piece, and Curbside Cleanup takes two per household in even years.

City cost & eligibility
For households with city service the monthly pickup carries no separate charge because it is covered by the monthly Bulky Item Management Fee. The annual recycling drop-off event charges $25 for each mattress or box spring and $10 for each crib mattress in cash or by check. Hennepin County charges $25 per item, but takes mattresses at its Brooklyn Park transfer station only, not at the Bloomington facility.
When & how
Request the monthly pickup from Better Futures Minnesota by 4 p.m. two business days ahead, or bring the mattress to the annual recycling drop-off event, held in September at the Western Maintenance Center, 10500 Hampshire Ave S.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and free of bugs, remove bedding and frames, and cover it if rain or snow is expected. Mattresses that cannot be reused are recycled, so keep the cover intact and do not soak or bag the item.

Appliances including refrigerators

Accepted with preparation

Residential appliances are accepted by the monthly bulky pickup, including refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, stoves, microwaves, water heaters and water softeners, and each unit must be clean.

City cost & eligibility
For households with city service the monthly pickup carries no separate charge because it is covered by the monthly Bulky Item Management Fee. The annual recycling drop-off event charges $10 for each appliance in cash or by check, Hennepin County charges $15 per large appliance, and a year-round on-call pickup through the city is billed at $62.11 for a large appliance over 50 pounds or more than half metal.
When & how
Use the monthly bulky pickup, the September recycling drop-off event at the Western Maintenance Center, 10500 Hampshire Ave S, the Hennepin County drop-off facility on West 96th Street, or an on-call pickup scheduled through Utility Billing at 952-563-8726.
Get it ready
Empty and defrost the unit and keep it clean, remove or tie shut any door a child or pet could enter, and tell the hauler that the appliance holds refrigerant. Curbside Cleanup allows two appliances per household and asks that they go out the morning of pickup so the refrigerant lines are not cut.

Televisions, monitors and laptops

Accepted with preparation

Televisions, computer monitors and laptops are refused by the monthly bulky pickup and by Curbside Cleanup, so they go to the annual recycling drop-off event, the Hennepin County drop-off facility on West 96th Street, or an on-call electronic pickup arranged through the city.

City cost & eligibility
The annual recycling drop-off event charges $20 for CRT or tube televisions and monitors and $10 for flat-panel televisions, computer monitors and laptops, paid in cash or by check. Hennepin County charges $10 each for televisions, computer monitors and laptops. An on-call electronic pickup through Utility Billing is billed at $31.05 for items under 20 pounds without screens and $49.68 for items over 20 pounds with screens or monitors.
When & how
Bring screens to the annual recycling drop-off event in September at the Western Maintenance Center, 10500 Hampshire Ave S, drive to the Hennepin County drop-off facility on West 96th Street, or call Utility Billing at 952-563-8726 for a curbside electronic pickup.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data where the device powers on, keep screens out of the recycling cart, and follow the station order at the event so unloading stays quick. County rules ask residents to stay in their vehicles with items in the trunk, truck bed or a trailer.

Computers, peripherals and small electronics

Accepted with preparation

Smaller electronics are the cheapest bulky stream in Bloomington: keyboards, mice, speakers, cords, cell phones, printers, stereos and DVD or VCR players are free at the annual drop-off event, and the county facility takes most electronics at no charge.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free at the annual recycling drop-off event for other electronics including computer accessories, cords, cell phones, printers, stereos and DVD or VCR players, and free at Hennepin County drop-off facilities for computer peripherals, audio and video equipment, phones and rechargeable products, with a limit of five items of the same type per household each year. Televisions, monitors and laptops are charged separately at both sites.
When & how
Bring them to the annual recycling drop-off event on Saturday, September 26, 2026 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Western Maintenance Center, 10500 Hampshire Ave S, or to the Hennepin County drop-off facility on West 96th Street during its open hours.
Get it ready
Remove batteries where the device allows, wipe personal data from anything that powers on, and keep electronics out of the garbage and recycling carts. Confirm the county facility's current hours before the trip, because the county page does not list them and the city asks residents to check the Green Disposal Guide.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise machines are refused by the annual recycling drop-off event and are not on the monthly reuse pickup list, so a treadmill or similar machine moves either through the even-year Curbside Cleanup or through an on-call bulky pickup that the city quotes.

City cost & eligibility
Curbside Cleanup collects treadmills with no separate charge for households that pay the Bulky Item Management Fee and counts them among four bulky items. A year-round on-call pickup is billed at $37.27 for an item under 50 pounds and $62.11 for a larger one, and the city confirms the tier when you call Utility Billing at 952-563-8726.
When & how
Ask Utility Billing at 952-563-8726 about an on-call pickup, wait for the next even-year Curbside Cleanup on your district Saturday, or move a working machine through a donation or resale outlet.
Get it ready
Describe the machine and its weight when you call. Break the machine down so one person can handle it, and drain and remove oil, gas and tires from a powered machine.

Large household items

Accepted with preparation

Beyond furniture and appliances, the monthly pickup takes a set of medium items such as bicycles, grills, toilets, sinks, cabinets, doors, windows, light fixtures, scrap metal, tools and up to 50 cubic feet of building materials, one offering per month.

City cost & eligibility

For households with City of Bloomington garbage and recycling service, one scheduled pickup a month included in the monthly Bulky Item Management Fee on the residential utility bill, so there is no separate charge at pickup. Households that opt out of city solid waste service are not eligible for bulky material collections or the Citywide Curbside Cleanup program.
When & how
Book with Better Futures Minnesota by 4 p.m. at least two business days before your pickup day at 612-353-5400 or online, and put the items out by 7 a.m. on your regular garbage and recycling day during the first full week of the month.
Get it ready
Choose one monthly combination: two large items, one large item with two medium items, one large item with 50 cubic feet of building materials, three medium items, or two medium items with building materials, plus up to four tools. Keep everything dry and cover the load in wet weather.

Building materials and renovation debris

Special rules apply

Building materials and small renovation debris are accepted by the monthly bulky pickup and by the even-year Curbside Cleanup, never from a business or contractor, and the annual recycling drop-off event refuses them.

City cost & eligibility
Up to 50 cubic feet of building materials can go out with a monthly bulky pickup at no separate charge for households with city service, because the pickup is covered by the monthly Bulky Item Management Fee. Curbside Cleanup, held in even years, takes construction and demolition material limited to one level standard pickup truck load. Material produced by a business or a contractor is refused by both routes.
When & how
Schedule the monthly pickup with Better Futures Minnesota, or wait for Curbside Cleanup in an even-numbered year. Material that a contractor generated has to go to a private container or a transfer station instead.
Get it ready
Lumber must be free of nails and between four and twelve feet long for the monthly pickup, and stacked no longer than five feet for Curbside Cleanup. Tile must be in a complete box and plywood at least four feet by four feet. Railroad ties, chemically treated lumber, concrete, bricks, shingles and asbestos are refused.

Tires

Special rules apply

Tires are refused by the monthly bulky pickup and by Curbside Cleanup, so they go to the annual recycling drop-off event or the Hennepin County drop-off facility on West 96th Street.

City cost & eligibility
$5 per tire at the annual recycling drop-off event and at the Hennepin County drop-off facility, paid in cash or by check at the city event. Bloomington residents at the city event, and Hennepin County households with proof of residency at the county facility. The county limits a load to 16 tires with 32 per household each year, takes tires with or without rims under four feet in diameter, and refuses bicycle tires.
When & how
Take tires to the annual recycling drop-off event in September at the Western Maintenance Center, 10500 Hampshire Ave S, or to the Hennepin County drop-off facility on West 96th Street.
Get it ready
Tires may stay on the rim. Keep bicycle tires and oversized tires out of the load, and confirm the county's current load and yearly limits before you make a large trip.

Set dry items out for the monthly pickup

Schedule with Better Futures Minnesota before 4 p.m. at least two business days ahead, then put the items at the curb by 7 a.m. on your regular garbage and recycling day during the first full week of the month. Everything must be dry, and items should be covered with a tarp when rain or snow is expected. Better Futures opens the cover to inspect and leaves the tarp behind.

Bulky item collection: monthly reuse pickup, annual drop-off event and Curbside Cleanup

Follow the Curbside Cleanup set-out rules

In an even-numbered year, put materials out no more than two days before your district Saturday and by 7 a.m. on the day itself. Weight cannot exceed 100 pounds per item and the truck passes only once, so anything left behind stays at the curb. Remove or tie shut appliance doors, drain engines, and break items down so one person can handle them.

Bloomington's own routes are the monthly bulky reuse pickup through Better Futures Minnesota and the annual recycling drop-off event at the Western Maintenance Center on Hampshire Avenue. You can book while your items are still inside. Arrange any indoor carrying and have everything outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We load and haul it away from there. Contact us before booking if your property has restricted access.

Can I put a couch out for the monthly bulky pickup?

Yes. Couches 90 inches or shorter are collected at the curb when they are dry and in good condition, and the pickup is already covered by the monthly Bulky Item Management Fee. Reclining and powered couches, glass topped tables and shelves, and bed rails are not accepted, so check the item before you schedule.Official guidance

Does Bloomington pick up mattresses at the curb?

Yes, for households with city garbage service. Schedule a monthly bulky pickup with Better Futures Minnesota, keep the mattress dry, and put it out by 7 a.m. on your regular collection day. Box springs count the same way, and unusable mattresses are recycled instead of reused.Official guidance

Where can I take a refrigerator in Bloomington?

A clean refrigerator is accepted by the monthly bulky pickup for households with city garbage service, by the September recycling drop-off event at a per-appliance price, and by the Hennepin County drop-off facility on West 96th Street at a higher per-appliance price. Remove or tie shut the door and keep the refrigerant line intact until pickup.Official guidance

Where can I take an old television in Bloomington?

Neither the monthly bulky pickup nor Curbside Cleanup accepts televisions. Use the annual recycling drop-off event in September, the Hennepin County drop-off facility on West 96th Street, or an on-call electronic pickup arranged through Utility Billing at 952-563-8726.Official guidance

Who can use Bloomington's bulky item programs?

Households with City of Bloomington garbage and recycling service, which the city describes as single family homes, duplexes and certain townhomes that opted in. Apartments and some townhomes are outside the curbside programs and pay through their own association, and a household that opts out of city solid waste service cannot use the bulky collection or the Citywide Curbside Cleanup program.Official guidance

Is there an extra charge for the monthly bulky pickup?

No separate charge at pickup, because the program is covered by the monthly Bulky Item Management Fee on the residential utility bill, and every garbage customer pays that fee. The annual recycling drop-off event and the on-call hauler pickup are priced separately from it.Official guidance

Who can use the Hennepin County drop-off facility in Bloomington?

Hennepin County households, with proof of residency such as a driver's license or utility bill. Household hazardous waste is also accepted from several neighboring counties, but businesses, rental property operators and condominium or townhouse associations are generally not eligible, and mattresses are taken at the Brooklyn Park transfer station only.Official guidance
