Mattresses and box springs go out with the monthly bulky pickup when they are dry and free of bugs, and the city sends them to reuse or recycling. The annual drop-off event prices them per piece, and Curbside Cleanup takes two per household in even years.
City cost & eligibility
For households with city service the monthly pickup carries no separate charge because it is covered by the monthly Bulky Item Management Fee. The annual recycling drop-off event charges $25 for each mattress or box spring and $10 for each crib mattress in cash or by check. Hennepin County charges $25 per item, but takes mattresses at its Brooklyn Park transfer station only, not at the Bloomington facility.
When & how
Request the monthly pickup from Better Futures Minnesota by 4 p.m. two business days ahead, or bring the mattress to the annual recycling drop-off event, held in September at the Western Maintenance Center, 10500 Hampshire Ave S.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and free of bugs, remove bedding and frames, and cover it if rain or snow is expected. Mattresses that cannot be reused are recycled, so keep the cover intact and do not soak or bag the item.
Schedule with Better Futures Minnesota before 4 p.m. at least two business days ahead, then put the items at the curb by 7 a.m. on your regular garbage and recycling day during the first full week of the month. Everything must be dry, and items should be covered with a tarp when rain or snow is expected. Better Futures opens the cover to inspect and leaves the tarp behind.
In an even-numbered year, put materials out no more than two days before your district Saturday and by 7 a.m. on the day itself. Weight cannot exceed 100 pounds per item and the truck passes only once, so anything left behind stays at the curb. Remove or tie shut appliance doors, drain engines, and break items down so one person can handle them.
The event runs on a Saturday in September at the Western Maintenance Center, 10500 Hampshire Ave S, and payment is cash or by check only. Pack your vehicle in the reverse order of the stations so unloading stays quick, keep walking or biking materials in out of the event, and turn the vehicle off while unloading.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

City monthly bulky reuse pickup
Reusable and recyclable household items, including furniture in good condition, mattresses and box springs, appliances, bicycles, grills, cabinets, doors, windows, light fixtures, scrap metal, tools and up to 50 cubic feet of building materials.
Cost & conditions
No charge. For households with City of Bloomington garbage and recycling service. The pickup is included in the monthly Bulky Item Management Fee on the residential utility bill, so there is no separate charge at pickup, and households that opt out of city solid waste service are not eligible.

Schedule with Better Futures Minnesota by 4 p.m. at least two business days before your monthly pickup day, by phone at 612-353-5400 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or online. Items are collected the first full week of each month on your regular garbage and recycling day.
One offering a month, with item quantities limited by size and up to four tools. Refused: batteries, carpet and pads, electronics, household hazardous waste, light bulbs, paint, propane tanks, PVC plumbing materials, railroad ties, tires, trash, shingles, and yard and tree waste. Items must be dry and in good condition, and appliances must be clean.

No charge. Households that pay the Bulky Item Management Fee on the city utility bill. Apartments and some town homes may not be included, so check with the property manager or the city first. Materials left behind after the single truck pass are the household's responsibility.
Arrange it
Curbside Cleanup runs every other year, in even-numbered years only, on five assigned Saturdays by hauling district. It ran in April 2026 and the city lists the next Curbside Cleanup as 2028.
Limits of two appliances, two mattresses or box springs and two unusable furniture items per household, four other bulky items, and construction and demolition material limited to one level standard pickup truck load. Electronics, tires, batteries, hazardous waste, plumbing fixtures, small items and yard waste are refused.
