A clear count. An exact price.

Count the bags and boxes, not everything inside.

A few simple choices turn a mixed pile into a clear booking. No need to estimate how much of a truck it might fill.

Filled bags and boxes

Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.

Empty cardboard and containers

Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Furniture and other larger items

Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Furniture and household bulk

Accepted with preparation

Large furniture goes out during one of two bulk weeks a year at the front kerb only, up to three large items or seven smaller ones, with the household's area deciding the dates.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. City of University City residential accounts with a current solid waste account, for the spring and fall bulk weeks that cover every neighbourhood; a collection missed during the assigned week has to be rearranged as a special bulk collection for a fee.
When & how
Find the area and the assigned week through the city map, the street listing or Public Works on 314-505-8560, then set the items within one to three feet of the kerb by Sunday night of that week, because the city makes only one pass down each street.
Get it ready
Stay within three large items or seven smaller items, keep access clear of parked vehicles, wrap glass doors, tables, windows and mirrors in cardboard for safety, and keep the refused material out of the pile because a ticket is possible: televisions, computers, hazardous material, commercial or business equipment, yard waste, tree trunks, logs, building or construction debris, tires, auto batteries and motors, railroad ties, barrel drums, concrete, bricks, landscaping stones, boulders, rocks, dirt and household trash.

Appliances and white goods

Special rules apply

Appliances count as bulk items during the spring and fall weeks, and a refrigerator or air conditioner is taken only once the freon has been removed.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. City of University City residential accounts with a current solid waste account, for the spring and fall bulk weeks, with refrigerators and air conditioners accepted once the freon has been removed and appliances otherwise refused in the weekly trash cart.
When & how
Set the appliance out at the front kerb during the assigned bulk week, which is found through the city map or Public Works on 314-505-8560, and arrange the freon removal before the item goes out.
Get it ready
Remove the freon from every refrigerator and air conditioner, empty and clean the unit, secure or remove the doors, and keep appliances out of the trash cart entirely, because microwaves, freon units and other appliances are on the list of materials that cannot be placed there.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Two carts, a 200 pound cap and nothing left outside

Every University City household has one black trash cart and one blue recycling cart, or access to a city issued dumpster, and household trash or recycling has to be inside the designated container because nothing placed outside it will be collected. Carts go curbside by 6:30am on the collection day or after 4 pm the day before and come back in by 9:00pm that day, the capacity is 200 pounds, and the cart has to be no more than four feet from the kerb with no obstruction such as another cart, a parked car, a street light or a tree within four feet. An overloaded cart may be left unemptied and can draw a ticket. Appliances including microwaves and freon units, televisions, computers, hazardous material, tires, construction debris, batteries, liquid waste, fluorescent bulbs, heavy rigid metal and motor oil are all on the list of things that cannot go in the trash cart.

The bulk weeks are organised by area and monitored at the kerb

Bulk collection runs twice a year for every neighbourhood, in the spring and again in the autumn, and the date depends on whether the address is in the west, central or east area, which residents confirm with Public Works on 314-505-8560 or on the September and April pages of the city calendar. Acceptable items are collected by city staff at the front kerb only, and dumping them in an alley, street or yard is not an option. The household limit is three large items or seven smaller ones within one to three feet of the kerb, placed by Sunday night of the scheduled week, with only one pass down each street and access left clear of parked vehicles. Glass doors, tables, windows and mirrors must be wrapped in cardboard, freon has to be removed from refrigerators and air conditioners, and the solid waste account must be current to take part.

Leaves rake to the kerb, everything else bags up

Leaf collection runs city-wide for three weeks in the spring and six weeks in the autumn, and residents rake the leaves to the kerb line the Sunday before collection begins in their area, checking the schedule or the white banners for dates. Bags are not needed for leaves during those windows, but the pile has to stay pure: gumballs, trash, small branches and limbs, brush and grass clippings must not be mixed in with the leaves and instead go into biodegradable bags for pickup on the regular trash and recycling collection day. Leaves may not be swept into the street more than three days before the window opens or after it closes, and yard waste of any kind may not go into a city container because Missouri bans it from landfills. The yard waste sticker that older guidance still mentions was abolished effective March 11, 2025.

Use the spring or autumn bulk week

A University City household with large furniture, bedding, mattresses, cabinets, rugs, carpet, wrapped doors and windows, or appliances that will not fit the carts.

Book a special bulk collection after a missed week

A household that missed its assigned bulk week or has material left over afterwards.

Cost & conditions
$30 per item for a special bulk pickup, paid in advance, up to a maximum of 200 dollars for one pickup of up to 10 items. City of University City solid waste accounts. The city schedules the pickup seven days after it receives the application and payment, collections run only on a Wednesday or Friday, and items should be at the curb within 24 hours of the scheduled pickup.
Arrange it
Call Public Works on 314-505-8560 to book the special bulk collection, and keep the items off the kerb until the booking is confirmed.

Wait for an electronics collection event

A household with a television, computer or similar electronic item that the bulk weeks and the trash cart both refuse.

Cost & conditions
The city says televisions and computers are no longer accepted at bulk collection and that it holds electronics collection events in the spring and autumn, but the retained page carries no dates or fees, so confirm the next event with the city before storing the item indefinitely.
Arrange it
Watch for the city's spring and autumn electronics collection events, or use one of the additional recycling locations the city links, rather than setting the device out for a bulk week.

Event based rather than year round, no dates published on the retained page, and setting a television or computer out for bulk collection risks a ticket.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

University City runs its own department rather than pointing residents at a county site, and the retained pages describe collection programmes rather than a public drop-off with a published address. The workhorses are the carts: one black trash cart and one blue recycling cart per household, or a city dumpster, with nothing collected outside the container, a 200 pound capacity, carts no more than four feet from the kerb and no obstruction within four feet. Large material waits for one of the two bulk weeks, spring and autumn, by west, central or east area, at the front kerb only, with three large items or seven smaller ones within one to three feet of the kerb by Sunday night of the assigned week, glass wrapped in cardboard and freon removed from refrigerators and air conditioners. Leaves are the one thing the city wants at the curb rather than in a bag: they go to the kerb line the Sunday before a collection window that runs three weeks in the spring and six in the autumn, with other yard waste in biodegradable bags on the regular collection day now that the yard waste sticker has been abolished. Televisions, computers, tires, construction debris, concrete, dirt, logs, hazardous material, batteries and liquid waste are excluded from all of those routes, and the city handles electronics through separate spring and autumn events. The operational services office is at 1015 Pennsylvania Avenue, open Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with Public Works on 314-505-8560 and the Street Division on 314-505-8575. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Bulk junk removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in University City.

How much does bulk junk removal cost in University City?

A trash bag is $59 as the first item and $10 additional. A filled household box is $59 as the first item. Add your actual items and quantities to see the combined price before booking. Loading, transportation and disposal are included; any applicable sales tax is shown before payment.

Can you pick up bags of junk today?

Book by 2pm in the pickup address’s local time for same-day pickup. Available dates appear at checkout. Have the booked bags and boxes outside and accessible according to your confirmation. You receive pickup updates and completion photos; the booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time.

Do I count every object inside a bag or box?

No. Count the filled bags or boxes using the matching choice. Books and media go in Filled household box; clothes, bedding and shoes go in Bag of clothes & bedding; packed toys have a Box of toys choice. Empty cardboard is separate, with individual empty boxes and bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Heavy, oversized or unusual contents need a photo review before booking.

Can you pick up a small loose pile of household junk?

Yes. Estimate how many trash bags the small household pile would fill, and bag or box as much as possible. Select furniture and other larger items separately. There is no extra charge just because the pile is loose. Send a photo first if the count or contents are unclear. A household Dumpster Bag choice does not accept construction debris.

Can I book bags, boxes and furniture together?

Yes. Select the bags and boxes, then add each larger item using its own catalog choice. The booking shows one combined price for the selected items. Move everything to an accessible outdoor spot before pickup; indoor carrying and sorting are not included. Keep anything you want to retain apart from the booked items and identify what goes in your photos and notes.

How does a University City couch leave the house?

On one of the two bulk weeks the city runs each year, once in the spring and once in the autumn, arranged by whether the address sits in the west, central or east area. City staff collect acceptable items at the front kerb only, never from an alley, street or yard, and the household may set out no more than three large items or seven smaller ones within one to three feet of the kerb by Sunday night of its assigned week, because only one pass is made down each street. The solid waste account has to be current to take part.Official guidance

What has to happen before a University City fridge goes out?

The freon comes out first. The bulk programme accepts large appliances including refrigerators, stoves, water heaters, washers, dryers, microwaves and small air conditioners, but it states plainly that freon must be removed from refrigerators and air conditioners before collection. Appliances can also never go in the weekly trash cart, because microwaves and freon units are on the city's list of materials that must not be placed there. The appliance then goes to the front kerb during the household's spring or autumn bulk week.Official guidance

Who collects University City trash and recycling?

The City of University City Sanitation Department does, and it is one of the few municipalities in the St Louis area that owns and operates its own transfer station and refuse and recycling trucks. Each household has one black trash cart and one blue recycling cart, or a city dumpster, with nothing collected outside the container. Carts go out by 6:30am on the collection day or after 4 pm the night before and come back in by 9:00pm, the capacity is 200 pounds, and the solid waste account must be kept current, with billing statements staggered by route through the year.Official guidance

When are the University City bulk weeks?

Twice a year, once in the spring and once in the autumn, with the exact week decided by whether the address is in the west, central or east area. Residents confirm their area and dates through the city map, the street listing or Public Works on 314-505-8560, or by checking the September and April pages of the city calendar. Acceptable items go to the front kerb only by Sunday night of the assigned week, with three large items or seven smaller ones allowed and only one pass made down each street.Official guidance

What will University City refuse at bulk collection?

Computers and televisions are no longer accepted at bulk collection, and the city instead runs electronics events in the spring and autumn. Along with those, the refused list covers hazardous materials and chemicals, commercial items or business equipment, yard waste, tree trunks and logs, building or construction debris, tires, auto batteries and motors, railroad ties, barrel drums, concrete, bricks, landscaping stones, boulders, rocks, dirt and household trash, and setting any of them out can draw a ticket. Freon must be removed from refrigerators and air conditioners before those units are collected, and glass doors, tables, windows and mirrors must be wrapped in cardboard.Official guidance
