Match the dresser’s overall size. Add a separate dresser mirror as its own item if it is leaving too. Empty drawers and keep the belongings you want before moving the dresser outside.
Desks and bookshelves
Choose by construction, not height alone. A basic desk is different from a heavy desk with a substantial body. A tall, lightweight bookcase can still be a standard bookshelf. Empty it first.

City cost & eligibility
The town publishes no bulky item rate. Garbage that will not fit in the cart goes to the Citizen's Convenience Center at no charge, while a scheduled special collection is described as carrying fees that may apply, so confirm the arrangement and any charge with 311 before the pickup.

Get it ready
Keep furniture out of the cart, and keep it clear of light poles, mailboxes, fire hydrants and the yard waste pile if it is set out at the curb. Construction debris, paint, tires and treated lumber are refused, so leave those off the load.
Rollout carts go to the curb no earlier than dusk the night before collection and no later than 7 a.m. on the collection day, with the arrows on the lid pointing toward the street. Keep the cart out of the roadway and clear of light poles, mailboxes and fire hydrants, leave room between the garbage and recycling carts and the yard waste pile, and bring the emptied cart back in before 6 a.m. the next day.
Cary says the Citizen's Convenience Center stays open as usual through December 31, 2026, and that from January 1, 2027 only the food and yard waste drop-off remains because the North Carolina Railroad needs the right-of-way. For everything else the town points residents to the Wake County Multi-Material Recycling Facility on Old Smithfield Road in Apex and the Wake County Convenience Center on Aviation Parkway in Morrisville, where county fees may apply, and it confirms that curbside collection is not affected.

The town says a scheduled special collection may carry a fee but publishes no amount, so confirm the charge with 311 when the collection is booked.
Arrange it
Call 311 inside Cary or (919) 469-4000 from outside town limits, or submit a request through the town's service system, and follow the set-out instructions it gives.
The cart service itself is for household garbage and recycling, and material the town refuses at its own facility, such as construction debris, paint, tires and treated lumber, stays off this route.
