The city publishes no separate mattress rate but does list special handling for bulky and loose items placed at the curb, so confirm the unit with Public Services at (828) 323-7500. A mattress dropped at a county convenience center is priced on site by the attendant from the size of the load.
When & how
Put the mattress at the curb on the regular garbage day, because the bulky pass runs that same day. A mattress can also go to a county convenience center, where the Blackburn site on Rocky Ford Road in Newton takes drops Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and set it where crews can see and lift it without blocking the rollout, the yard waste or the sidewalk. Describe a queen or king set, a box spring, or a wet and soiled unit to Public Services before it goes out.
Garbage leaves the curb in the green rollout before 7 a.m.
The green rollout goes to the curb with the arrows on the lid pointing toward the road before 7 a.m. on the collection day and comes back in the same day. It sits within 2 feet of the curb and 5 feet from any obstruction such as low hanging branches or wires, stays closed rather than stuffed, holds only bagged garbage, and never holds liquids or automobile parts. Hickory runs the bulky and yard waste passes on that same collection day.

Bulky items are placed at the curb and the city asks that they sit where proper clearance is kept around the rollout containers and the yard waste, so crews can reach each pile. Keep a furniture pile separate from appliances, screens, tires and renovation material, and keep the pile off any storm drain or sidewalk. The bulky collection runs on the same day as the regular garbage run, in a separate pass.
