Couch & furniture removal in HickoryCity collection Household furniture is the first bulky example the city publishes, so a sofa, a couch or an upholstered chair belongs at the curb rather than in a rollout. It leaves on the normal garbage day, on a bulky pass that runs separately from the garbage truck. Hickory does not publish a per-item furniture rate. Its adopted fee schedule prices special handling for bulky, junk and other loose items placed at the curb, with a handling and loading minimum, an administrative fee and tonnage charges that can apply by weight, so confirm the pieces and the price with Public Services at (828) 323-7500 before the item goes out.

The city publishes no separate mattress rate but does list special handling for bulky and loose items placed at the curb, so confirm the unit with Public Services at (828) 323-7500. A mattress dropped at a county convenience center is priced on site by the attendant from the size of the load.

Appliance pickup in HickoryCity collection Appliances are collected on a call-in basis only, and Hickory runs the special pickup on Thursdays. The city publishes no rate for the call-in appliance pickup, and its fee schedule covers bulky and loose curb items rather than a named appliance price. The county routes are published as free to residents, so confirm the city pickup with Public Services at (828) 323-7500 and confirm the drop-off with the landfill at (704) 462-1348.

The local disposal guide
Hickory runs its own sanitation division inside the city limits. Garbage leaves the curb weekly in the green rollout, recycling runs every other week on that same day, and yard waste is collected weekly on that day too. Bulky items ride a separate pass on the same day: the city names furniture and mattresses as the examples that belong at the curb, while appliances are collected only after a call-in request, on a Thursday special pickup. Whatever the curbside routes do not cover goes to the county system in Newton, where the Blackburn Landfill and five staffed convenience centers take mattresses and other bulky waste for a fee, recycle white goods and scrap metal, and run a free residential drop-off for televisions, computers, paint and household batteries, all of it under North Carolina's landfill bans on screens and appliances.

Catawba County runs a free residential electronics drop-off at the Blackburn Landfill, and Caldwell TV in Hickory takes televisions for a donation program whether they work or not.
Scrap metal is on the city's list of items that must stay out of the blue recycling rollout, and no curbside scrap metal route is published. Catawba County recycles scrap metal at the Rocky Ford Road convenience center and takes white goods and bulk metal at the Blackburn Landfill.
Yard waste is collected once a week at the curb on the same day as the rollout garbage, and leaves get their own curbside season in the fall. Material has to be bagged or canned to the published sizes, and oversized piles, stumps, trunks and contractor material are handled outside the weekly route.
The city publishes no curbside route for renovation material, and its weekly routes cover household garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky household items. Catawba County takes the load at the construction and demolition side of the Blackburn Landfill on Rocky Ford Road, where separated asphalt, brick, block and concrete are free only when they are clean and unpainted.
Exercise equipment is not named in the city's bulky examples, in the appliance rule or in any county material list, so the machine has to be approved before it goes out. If the city accepts it, the machine rides the bulky pass; a county convenience center takes bulky waste for a fee if the city does not.
The handoff matters
The green rollout goes to the curb with the arrows on the lid pointing toward the road before 7 a.m. on the collection day and comes back in the same day. It sits within 2 feet of the curb and 5 feet from any obstruction such as low hanging branches or wires, stays closed rather than stuffed, holds only bagged garbage, and never holds liquids or automobile parts. Hickory runs the bulky and yard waste passes on that same collection day.

Keep a furniture pile separate from appliances, screens, tires and renovation material, and keep the pile off any storm drain or sidewalk. The bulky collection runs on the same day as the regular garbage run, in a separate pass.
