The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Huntersville splits its waste work between three parties. Waste Connections runs the household carts, with garbage and yard waste every week and recycling every other week. The town's own Public Works department runs a separate Monday bulk and brush pickup for a fee, and that service is where a mattress, couch, appliance, flat screen television or metal exercise machine goes when it will not fit a cart. Mecklenburg County runs the drop-off side: four full-service centers open Monday through Saturday, including the North Mecklenburg center on Statesville Road in Huntersville, take bulky waste, construction and demolition debris, yard waste, electronics, tires and household hazardous waste. Fees apply to bulky waste, construction material and yard waste at the county centers, while household hazardous waste is free to county residents.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress and a box spring are both standard items on the town's Monday bulk list, so they go out with the separate Public Works pickup rather than with the household cart, priced as two items in the same request.

City cost & eligibility
From $40 for for two standard bulk items in one Monday request, which is also the minimum charge for any request, with each additional standard item charged on its own line. Town of Huntersville residential addresses only. The town does not offer bulk pickup at apartment complexes, businesses or corporations, or at any address outside the town limits, and the request has to be scheduled and paid before midnight on Sunday.
When & how
Collected on Mondays starting at 7 a.m., and moved to Tuesday when a holiday falls on a Monday. Book and pay through the town's online bulk item and brush pile request form by the Sunday midnight deadline so the pieces make that week's run.
Get it ready
Have the mattress and box spring at the curb by 7 a.m. and at least three feet from carts, mailboxes, poles and vehicles. Count the pieces as separate items when you price the request, and keep the load to a few pieces, because the town states that a request it considers too large will be refused.

Sofas, tables and furniture

Accepted with preparation

Couches, love seats, chairs, desks, dining tables, dressers, hutches, lamps and metal or plastic outdoor furniture are standard items on the town's Monday bulk list, while a sectional sofa is priced as an oversized piece.

City cost & eligibility
From $40 for for two standard furniture pieces in one Monday request, with a sectional sofa charged as an oversized item on its own line. Town of Huntersville residential addresses only, with the request submitted and paid before midnight on Sunday. Apartment complexes, businesses and addresses outside the town limits are not served.
When & how
Collected on Mondays starting at 7 a.m., moved to Tuesday when a holiday falls on a Monday, and scheduled through the town form before the Sunday midnight deadline.
Get it ready
Take the piece down as far as it will go and keep cushions with the frame. Leave treated wood and treated wooden outdoor furniture off the pile, because the town refuses treated wood of any kind, and remember that two chairs or two small tables count as one item while a three cushion sofa counts as one sofa.

Appliances and oversized white goods

Accepted with preparation

Appliances sit on two price lines for the town's Monday bulk pickup. A dishwasher, microwave, mini-fridge, range top, water heater or window air conditioner is a standard item, while a stove, refrigerator, washer, dryer or chest freezer is oversized and priced by itself.

City cost & eligibility
From $40 for for two standard appliances in one Monday request, which is also the minimum charge for any request, with oversized appliances such as a stove, refrigerator, washing machine, dryer or chest freezer charged on their own line. Town of Huntersville residential addresses only, with the request submitted and paid before midnight on Sunday. Apartment complexes, businesses and addresses outside the town limits are not served.
When & how
Collected on Mondays starting at 7 a.m., moved to Tuesday when a holiday falls on a Monday. Empty the unit, then set it at the curb with the doors removed or secured before the Sunday midnight booking deadline.
Get it ready
A refrigerator is limited to 36 inches and a chest freezer to 8.7 cubic feet, 100 pounds and about 41 by 34 by 24 inches, and both go out with the doors removed or secured and the interior emptied. Confirm refrigerant handling with Public Works at 704-875-7007 before the pickup, and keep gas cans, paint cans and hazardous material off the load.
Bulk item and brush pile pickup: scheduling, preparation, fee schedule, item lines and refusal list

Televisions and electronic waste

Special rules apply

A flat screen LCD or LED television is a standard item on the town's Monday bulk list, and electronics are named among the household bulk items the town accepts. Projection tube and rear projection televisions are refused, and the county drop-off centers are the route for those and for computer equipment.

City cost & eligibility
From $40 for for two standard bulk items in one Monday request, with a flat screen television counted as one standard item. Town of Huntersville residential addresses only for the curbside route, with the request paid before midnight on Sunday. County drop-off centers serve county residents with a free entry sticker and proof of residency.
When & how
Out on the Monday bulk run with the town, or dropped at a Mecklenburg County full-service center any Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nothing electronic goes in the household cart or the recycling cart.
Get it ready
Keep the set dry and keep televisions out of both carts. A projection tube or rear projection model does not belong on the town load, so confirm with the county center before you haul it, and expect computer equipment to be limited to two pieces per visit.
Bulk item and brush pile pickup: scheduling, preparation, fee schedule, item lines and refusal listMecklenburg County full-service recycling and disposal centers, accepted and refused items, sticker rules, fees and trailer limits

Construction and demolition debris

Not on the regular city route

Construction and demolition material is not household waste for the town. It cannot go in a cart or on a bulk request, and the town's refusal list names concrete, brick, block, shingles, sheet rock, lumber, flooring, carpet, tile, treated wood and pallets.

City cost & eligibility
The town publishes no rate because it does not collect the material, and the county prints its construction and demolition fees on a separate fee document rather than on the pages reviewed, so confirm the current charge at the fee booth before you load.
When & how
Drop-off at a Mecklenburg County full-service center Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no curbside collection day for this material.
Get it ready
Separate construction and demolition material from yard waste and bulky trash before you arrive, because the county does not accept mixed loads and charges a mixed load at the construction rate. Keep the trailer within the published limits, since a trailer over 12 feet is redirected away from the North Mecklenburg and Hickory Grove centers.

Exercise equipment

Accepted with preparation

Metal exercise equipment is named on the town's standard bulk list, so a treadmill frame, weight machine or similar piece goes out with the Monday pickup inside the usual two item charge.

City cost & eligibility
From $40 for for two standard bulk items in one Monday request, with metal exercise equipment counted as one standard item. Town of Huntersville residential addresses only, with the request submitted and paid before midnight on Sunday. Apartment complexes, businesses and addresses outside the town limits are not served.
When & how
Collected on Mondays starting at 7 a.m., moved to Tuesday when a holiday falls on a Monday, and booked through the town form before the Sunday midnight deadline.
Get it ready
Drain any water or oil reservoir, take off loose parts that could shift, and bring help because the town does not unload for you. Ask Public Works about a machine that is mostly plastic or has an electronic console, since the published line covers metal exercise equipment.
Bulk item and brush pile pickup: scheduling, preparation, fee schedule, item lines and refusal list

Tires

Special rules apply

Tires are on the town's refusal list, so they cannot go out with the carts or on a bulk request. Mecklenburg County accepts tires at its full-service drop-off centers with a limit of five tires per visit.

City cost & eligibility
The county publishes its disposal fees on a separate document rather than on the pages reviewed, so confirm the current tire charge at the fee booth along with the five tire limit before you load.
When & how
Drop-off at a county full-service center Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no curbside tire collection in Huntersville.
Get it ready
Count the tires before you leave, because the published limit is five per visit, and keep them off the town bulk pile and out of the carts. A vehicle delivering tires for a business has separate county permit requirements, which do not apply to a household load.

Bulk items, brush piles and larger loads

Special rules apply

The town runs a separate residential bulk and brush pickup on Mondays for a fee, priced by standard items, oversized items and brush or leaf loads, and it has to be scheduled and paid before midnight on Sunday.

City cost & eligibility
From $40 for for two standard bulk items in one Monday request, which is also the minimum charge for any request, with each additional standard item, each oversized item and each brush and leaf load priced on its own line. The town does not serve apartment complexes, businesses or corporations, or any address outside the town limits, and a request it considers too large is refused.
When & how
Mondays starting at 7 a.m., moved to Tuesday when a holiday falls on a Monday, with the request submitted and paid through the town form by the Sunday midnight deadline.
Get it ready
Have everything at the curb by 7 a.m. and clear of carts, mailboxes, poles, vehicles, sidewalks and gutters, with brush in one neat pile no larger than ten feet by ten feet by five feet and five to six feet of clearance under trees and power lines. Leaves go in brown paper bags of 25 to 35 gallons, and a cancellation within 24 hours of the scheduled pickup brings a refund within 60 days.

Bulk pickup runs on Mondays and is booked by Sunday midnight

The town's bulk and brush service collects on Mondays starting at 7 a.m., and it moves to Tuesday when a holiday falls on a Monday. The request and the payment have to be made through the town's online form before midnight on Sunday, and a request that is cancelled within 24 hours of the scheduled pickup brings a refund within 60 days.

Three feet from obstacles and five feet under the branches

Place bulk items and brush piles at least three feet from carts, mailboxes, power poles, vehicles and other obstacles, and keep brush five to six feet away from overhead trees and power lines. Nothing may block a sidewalk, roadway or gutter, and leaves go out only in brown paper bags holding 25 to 35 gallons and no more than 25 pounds each.

Carts out by 7 a.m. with room for the truck arm

Carts go curbside by 7 a.m. on the collection day with three feet of space between carts and four feet of clearance from mailboxes, poles, hydrants, trees and cars. Close the lid with the hinge away from the road, bag the trash, keep plastic bags and film out of the recycling cart, and break cardboard down to three feet by three feet so the lid shuts.

Weekly garbage and yard waste, recycling every other week

Waste Connections collects garbage and yard waste every week and recycling every other week, with the day looked up on the hauler schedule. Three holidays move the week: New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day delay collection by one day when they fall on a weekday, a Friday holiday moves pickup to Saturday, and a holiday on a weekend changes nothing.

Mecklenburg County full-service drop-off centers

A county household that would rather haul its own bulky waste, construction or demolition debris, yard waste, electronics or tires instead of booking a curbside pickup.

Cost & conditions
County fees apply to bulky waste, construction and demolition debris and yard waste, and the county publishes those rates on a separate fee document rather than on the pages reviewed, so confirm the current charge at the fee booth. Up to five bags of household kitchen trash a day are free to county residents.
Arrange it
Load the vehicle and drive to a full-service center, the closest being the North Mecklenburg center at 12300 Statesville Road in Huntersville, open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. County residents show a free blue entry sticker and proof of residency, and payment is by debit or most major credit cards, with no cash or checks accepted.

Pressurised cylinders over 20 pounds, ammunition, gunpowder, explosives, radioactive material, bio-infectious material, pharmaceuticals and smoke detectors are not accepted, and smoke detectors go in the regular trash. Limits apply to some streams, including a 20 gallon motor oil limit and a 100 pound paint limit for residents.

Will Huntersville take a mattress at the curb?

Yes, but not with the household cart. A mattress and a box spring are standard items on the town's Monday bulk list, collected by Public Works, and the request has to be scheduled and paid through the town form before midnight on Sunday. Apartment complexes, businesses and addresses outside the town limits are not served.Official guidance

Do a mattress and box spring count as one item or two?

They are separate items on the town list, and the published charge covers two standard items in one request, so setting out both in the same week is the inexpensive way to do it. A second mattress or extra bedding would be priced as an additional item.Official guidance

How does a couch get picked up in Huntersville?

A sofa or couch is a standard item on the town's Monday bulk list, and the published charge covers two standard items in a single request, so a couch and a chair can travel together. A sectional sofa is treated as oversized and priced on its own line, and the request has to be paid before midnight on Sunday.Official guidance

What furniture does the town refuse?

Treated wood is refused, including treated wooden outdoor furniture, playsets and wooden pallets, along with rugs, carpet and flooring. Metal or plastic outdoor furniture is on the accepted list, so check the material before you add a piece to the pile.Official guidance

Can a refrigerator go to the curb in Huntersville?

Yes, as an oversized item on the town's Monday bulk list, up to 36 inches, with the interior emptied and the doors removed or secured. A chest freezer is capped at 8.7 cubic feet and 100 pounds, and a larger freezer is refused. Confirm refrigerant handling with Public Works before the pickup.Official guidance

Which appliances count as standard items?

A dishwasher, microwave, mini-fridge, range top, water heater and window unit air conditioner are standard items, so two of them fit one published charge. A stove, refrigerator, washing machine, dryer, chest freezer, hot tub or riding lawn mower is oversized and priced on its own line.Official guidance

Will Huntersville take a television with the bulk pickup?

A flat screen LCD or LED television is on the town's standard bulk list, so it goes out with a Monday request inside the two item charge. Projection tube and rear projection televisions are on the town's refusal list, so those need the county route instead.Official guidance

Where do electronics and a refused television go in Mecklenburg County?

The county full-service drop-off centers accept electronics, and computer equipment such as CPUs, monitors, laptops and printers with a limit of two pieces per visit. County residents show a free blue entry sticker and proof of residency, and the pages read here do not say whether a television carries a charge, so confirm at the fee booth.Official guidance

How do I arrange a bulk pickup in Huntersville?

Complete the town's online bulk item and brush pile request form and pay before midnight on Sunday for that week's Monday run. The service is for town residential addresses, it is separate from the weekly cart service, and apartment complexes, businesses and addresses outside the town limits are not served.Official guidance

Who do I call when a Huntersville cart is missed?

Call Waste Connections on 704-596-9428 or email their customer service address, which is where the town directs cart, recycling and yard waste questions. A cart that was tagged as non-compliant was skipped on purpose, and it is collected on the next regular pickup once it meets the published rules.Official guidance

When are garbage, recycling and yard waste collected in Huntersville?

Garbage and yard waste are collected every week and recycling every other week, with the day found on the hauler's schedule. New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day push the rest of that week back one day when they fall on a weekday, and a holiday on a weekend does not change the schedule.Official guidance
