A county household with paint, solvents, automotive fluids, batteries, propane, mercury devices, fluorescent tubes or other household chemicals that cannot go in a cart.
Cost & conditions
No charge. Free to Mecklenburg County residents at the full-service drop-off centers, with a free entry sticker and proof of residency. Businesses may not use the household program, and the county runs separate quarterly events for small business material.
Arrange it
Take the material to a full-service center between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and tell on-site staff that hazardous waste is in the load. Keep material in original labeled containers where possible, never mix different chemicals, and pack it securely in a sturdy box.
Pressurised cylinders over 20 pounds, ammunition, gunpowder, explosives, radioactive material, bio-infectious material, pharmaceuticals and smoke detectors are not accepted, and smoke detectors go in the regular trash. Limits apply to some streams, including a 20 gallon motor oil limit and a 100 pound paint limit for residents.
