The local disposal guide
Mooresville runs its own sanitation department, and the way it handles a clean-out is unusual in a helpful direction. Garbage is collected weekly from a town roll-out container paid for through property taxes, and the town sends a second truck on the same route for bulky items, so furniture, mattresses and empty appliances go out with the regular trash at no extra charge and without an appointment. Recycling is collected on the same day every other week. Items the town will not take at all go to the county: electronics are banned from North Carolina landfills and go to the Iredell County Transfer Station on Macleod Drive, tires, construction debris and concrete follow separate county rules, and household chemicals are collected one Saturday a month at the Twin Oaks facility in Statesville. For a whole-garage clean-out, residents can also call for a free residential dumpster within its seasonal window.

A mattress is named in the town bulky waste list, so it goes out with the weekly bulk truck on the regular collection day at no extra charge and without an appointment. Nothing in the Mooresville program routes a mattress to the county fee scale.
Appliances are on the town bulky list as long as they are empty, and the named examples cover dishwashers, microwaves, residential stoves, washers and dryers. The county also takes white goods free of charge at the Mooresville Transfer Station when they are kept separate from other waste, so an appliance has two published routes rather than a fee question.
Refrigerators and freezers are named on the town bulky list under appliances, and the county white goods category names refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and water coolers as free at the Mooresville Transfer Station. The published requirement on both routes is that the unit is empty.
Electronics never go in the garbage, the recycling cart or the bulky pile. The town lists televisions, computers, printers and similar devices as items it does not consider bulky, states that electronic waste is banned from landfills in North Carolina, and sends residents to the Iredell County Transfer Station, where CRT televisions and monitors carry a published per unit charge and other electronics may carry fees.
The town does not collect construction or demolition debris, carpet, flooring, fencing or lumber at the curb, and the residential Dial-A-Dumpster refuses construction and contractor debris. The route is the Iredell County Transfer Station on Macleod Drive, which takes construction and demolition material by weight and refuses concrete, asphalt, brick, block, dirt, shingles, gravel and rocks.
Nothing in the Mooresville program names exercise equipment. The town bulky list does not include it, the county fee sheet does not name it, and the town warns that objects too large for a two-person carry are not considered bulky and that large or heavy items should be disassembled, so a machine is a question for sanitation before it goes to the curb.

The handoff matters
Everything goes at least three feet from the roll-out container and three feet from mailboxes, cars and other obstructions so the automated arm can reach the can. The lid has to close completely, nothing may be pushed down or packed above the rim, and bulky items or excess bags wait on the ground three feet away from the cart rather than beside it.

Cardboard is flattened for recycling, because the town collects an unflattened box as garbage, and oversized boxes are flattened and stacked beside the recycling cart instead of left loose at the curb.

Yes. Mattresses are named in the Mooresville bulk waste list, so one goes out beside the roll-out container on the regular collection day, the separate bulk truck collects it at no extra charge, and no appointment is needed. Large items can take three to five days to be picked up.Official guidance
Empty and with the bulky truck. The town names dishwashers, microwaves, stoves, washers and dryers in its weekly bulk waste list, and that pickup costs no extra charge on the household's own trash day. The county also takes white goods at the Mooresville Transfer Station at no charge, kept separate from other waste and free of food.Official guidance
Either route works and neither carries a charge. Refrigerators and freezers are on the town bulky list, so they ride the weekly bulk truck on the regular collection day. The county white goods list names refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and water coolers as free at the Mooresville Transfer Station when they are kept separate and emptied of food.Official guidance

The Town of Mooresville Sanitation Department, which is based at 2523 Charlotte Highway and can be reached on 704-663-7282. The town provides one roll-out garbage container per household paid through property taxes, collects garbage weekly and recycling every other week, and runs a second truck on every route for bulky items and excess bagged garbage.Official guidance
Ask the town. A household gets one roll-out garbage container paid through property taxes, and additional garbage containers are available at an extra cost through the billing office on 704-663-3800. On the recycling side a household gets one cart after registering and may request a second at no charge, and a damaged cart is replaced when it cannot be dumped or rolled or when the body, handle, lid or wheels are broken.Official guidance
Yes, within limits. Mooresville residents can call the sanitation department in advance for a residential Dial-A-Dumpster at no cost when the amount of material is more than the weekly route can carry. The container stays up to seven days, sits in the driveway, holds yard waste or household waste but never both, and is unavailable from November 1 to January 1. Construction debris, contractor debris, electronics, glass, paint, painted wood, pallets, shingles and vinyl siding are not allowed in it.Official guidance
Dry it out and put the can at the curb, or hold it for the county household hazardous waste day. Latex paint that is no longer flowable can go in the household trash, and a can less than a quarter full can be left open to air dry, with kitty litter, shredded paper or sawdust added to speed it up, before the can goes to the curb with the lid open for inspection. Anything still liquid goes to the Twin Oaks collection on the last Saturday morning of the month, limited to fifteen one-gallon cans per household.Official guidance
