The local disposal guide
Salisbury collects garbage and yard waste every week and recycling every other week, all on one collection day, and it treats anything left outside the green city cart as a bulky item that has to be booked and paid for in advance. Furniture, mattresses and box springs of any size, appliances and even treadmills are all on the city's acceptable bulky list, so a couch or an old stove can leave on the normal collection day once the pickup is arranged with Public Works by 2:30 the day before. The city also gives residents four free Spruce Up Weeks a year for extra household material, appliances and up to five tires without rims. Televisions, computers, electronics, hazardous material and building debris are refused on every city route and are referred to the county, and construction material has to go to the county landfill instead.

Salisbury will not collect electronics on any city route. Televisions, computers and electronics are refused in the bulky and Spruce Up lists, and the city sends residents to the Rowan County Recycling Center on (704) 216-8589 instead, with a call first instruction for hazardous items, paint, oil, gas and liquids. Lithium-ion batteries are moving to their own collection bins in fall 2026.
Building material is refused on every city route. The city lists paint, lumber, sheet rock, carpet, padding, large area rugs, shingles, toilets, sinks, windows and doors as material the Public Works crews cannot collect, and sends residents to the Rowan County Landfill on (704) 278-2211. There is no city drop-off and no bulky option for a renovation load.
Exercise equipment is named on the city's own acceptable bulky list, with treadmills given as the example alongside bicycles, vacuums and lamps, so a machine can be collected on the regular collection day once the pickup is scheduled and paid for. Spruce Up Weeks cover the same items free.

Pickups are scheduled and paid the day before, the truck that collects them is separate from the garbage truck, and four times a year the city waives the fee entirely for a Spruce Up Week.
Tires are refused in regular trash, recycling, bulky and yard waste collection, so they never go out with the weekly truck. There are two city-documented routes instead: up to five tires without rims per location during a Spruce Up Week, collected on the following Monday rather than on the collection day, and up to five tires without rims at any time at the Rowan County Landfill on Campbell Road.
Hazardous material has no city route. Paint and hazardous items appear on the refused list for both the bulky service and the free Spruce Up Weeks, and the city sends residents to the Rowan County Recycling Center on (704) 216-8589 with a call first instruction for paint, oils, gas and liquids. Lithium-ion batteries move to dedicated collection bins in fall 2026.
The handoff matters
Garbage and yard waste are collected every week and recycling every other week, all on the same weekday, and the carts go to the roadside by 7 a.m. and come back in by midnight. Put the cart within two feet of the roadside with the handle facing the house, leave three feet between it and anything else such as another cart, a mailbox or a pole, and keep it out of the street. Garbage is bagged inside the green city cart, and regular collection runs on every holiday except Christmas.

A separate truck handles the bulky stop on the same day as the normal collection, and the fee schedule covers up to two items with extra charges for additional items and for each extra bag or box.
