Desks and bookshelves
Choose by construction, not height alone. A basic desk is different from a heavy desk with a substantial body. A tall, lightweight bookcase can still be a standard bookshelf. Empty it first.

The city names couches, love seats, dressers, recliners, chairs, tables and regular furniture on its acceptable bulky item list, so a couch or a set of chairs can be collected on the normal trash day once the pickup is scheduled and paid for. Anything left outside the city cart counts as a bulky item, which is why furniture cannot simply be set out on the usual morning without a booking.

$10 for for a scheduled bulky pickup covering up to two items, with each additional item at five dollars and each extra bag or box at two dollars fifty, all paid in advance. Salisbury residents who schedule the pickup and pay no later than 2:30 p.m. the day before the collection day, in person at 303 W Franklin Street or by phone on (704) 638-5260 option 5, option 1, option 5, using Visa or MasterCard.
When & how
Book and pay before 2:30 p.m. the day before your regular collection day, then have the furniture at the curb by 7 a.m. on that day. A different truck from the usual garbage truck collects it.
Get it ready
Keep the piece whole and liftable, remove cushions or drawers only if they can be tied to it or bagged separately, keep it away from the cart, mailbox and poles so both trucks have room, and keep it out of the green cart.
Garbage and yard waste are collected every week and recycling every other week, all on the same weekday, and the carts go to the roadside by 7 a.m. and come back in by midnight. Put the cart within two feet of the roadside with the handle facing the house, leave three feet between it and anything else such as another cart, a mailbox or a pole, and keep it out of the street. Garbage is bagged inside the green city cart, and regular collection runs on every holiday except Christmas.
Anything outside the city cart is a booked bulky item
The city treats every item left outside its issued cart as bulky, so a piece of furniture or a bagged load needs a scheduled pickup and prepayment before 2:30 p.m. the day before the collection day. A separate truck handles the bulky stop on the same day as the normal collection, and the fee schedule covers up to two items with extra charges for additional items and for each extra bag or box. Bookings taken after the cut off wait a week.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Free to residents living inside the city limits of Salisbury during the four Spruce Up Weeks each year, with no businesses eligible and items at the curb before 7 a.m. on the regular collection day.
Arrange it
Put the accepted items at the curb on your regular collection day during the week, and leave tires without rims at the curb afterwards, because they are collected the following Monday. The 2026 rounds are January 5 to 9, April 6 to 10, July 13 to 17 and October 5 to 9.
The programme is for city residents only, the same refused list applies, including building material and electronics, tires are capped at five without rims per location, and the dates are set annually so the next round has to be confirmed on the city page.
