Choose by construction, not height alone. A basic desk is different from a heavy desk with a substantial body. A tall, lightweight bookcase can still be a standard bookshelf. Empty it first.

A couch, a sofa, an upholstered chair or another household furniture piece that is too large for a Dover trash bag leaves at the curb on the regular trash day with a bulky item tag. The tag program covers non-metal items, and furniture is one of the city's own examples, so this is the city route for a padded piece: the Recycling Center lists padded furniture as material it does not accept.
City cost & eligibility
$10 per bulky item tag, which the city sells alongside its own trash bags. Dover households on the curbside collection route; one tag covers one non-metal item within the published tag limits, and the city does not collect an untagged piece.
When & how
Put the tagged piece at the curb on your regular trash day, out by 7 a.m. and no earlier than 4 p.m. the day before, and it is collected with the household trash.

Buy the tag before collection day and attach it to the item, keep the piece within the published tag limits, and remember that an upholstered item cannot be taken to the Recycling Center instead because the site does not accept padded furniture.
Bags, tags and recycling follow the same set out window
Everything for curbside collection goes out by 7 a.m. on your trash day, and nothing goes to the curb earlier than 4 p.m. the day before. A 15 gallon Dover bag holds no more than 20 pounds and a 30 gallon bag no more than 35 pounds, both tied shut, and a tagged bulky item leaves on the same day as the trash. Recycling goes out with it, and the city will not collect bottles, cans or paper that are left curbside in plastic bags.
The bulky item tag is published for non-metal items, so a couch, a mattress, a toilet or a rolled carpet can leave from the curb while a refrigerator, a washer, a television, a microwave and a large load of construction material cannot. Buy the tag before collection day at the City Clerk's Office, the Public Works facility on Mast Road, the Recycling Center or a store that sells Dover bags, and attach it to the item you are setting out.
