A mattress or box spring goes out as bulky trash, and since 2025 the city requires it to be sealed in a clear plastic mattress bag before it reaches the curb.

When & how
Set the mattress out on your zone's bulk day, which is Thursday in the north zone, Friday in the central zone and Saturday in the south zone, and no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before pickup.
Get it ready
Cover the mattress or box spring with clear 1.5 mil polyethylene plastic or a mattress disposal bag as Ordinance No. 21 of 2025 requires, and keep the set sealed and dry until the bulk truck arrives.
East Orange is split into a north, central and south zone. Garbage runs twice a week in every zone, recycling runs every other week on the zone day, and bulky trash rides a separate truck on the zone's own day, which is Thursday in the north, Friday in the central zone and Saturday in the south.
The bulk truck takes three items per week. More than three cannot be put at the curb, so spread a larger clear-out across more than one bulk day or book the pieces that need an appointment.
Garbage, bulky trash and recyclables may not be placed at the curb before 6 p.m. the night before the collection day, and bulky trash has to be kept separate from the garbage rather than mixed into the cans.

Arrange it
Set the pieces at the curb on your zone's bulk day, not before 6 p.m. the night before, with mattresses and box springs sealed in clear plastic and carpet cut to 4 feet wide.
Three items per bulk day is the ceiling, more than three cannot go out, and the truck does not take appliances, metals, tires, televisions, electronics or hazardous material because those are appointment or county items.

Drive a load to the DPW yard on a Saturday
An East Orange resident with more bulky items than the three item curb limit allows in one week.
Cost & conditions
No charge. The Saturday bulk drop-off at the DPW yard is open to East Orange residents who show city identification, and the handbook publishes no fee for it.
Arrange it
Take the load to 133 Midland Avenue on one of the twice monthly Saturday bulk drop-off days between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., with East Orange identification, and expect a limit of ten bulk items per visit.
The drop-off runs twice a month on the published 2026 dates only, city identification is required, ten bulk items is the limit per visit, and the yard also refuses the same hazardous material the curb refuses.

Bulky trash on the twice monthly Saturday bulk drop-off days, including furniture, mattresses, box springs and similar household pieces, up to ten items per visit, and used motor oil for recycling.
East Orange identification is required, the drop-off runs on the published Saturday dates only, ten bulk items is the limit for a visit, and hazardous material, dirt, stones, concrete, bricks, stumps and logs are not accepted.
Saturday bulk drop-off days run twice a month from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the 2026 dates published in the handbook. Used motor oil is accepted on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Sanitation Division answers at (973) 266-5337.
