When & how
Non metal furniture goes out after 7:30 p.m., or after 9 p.m. in the Limited Business Area, on Sunday, Wednesday or Friday night. Metal furniture such as file cabinets, desks and bed frames goes out on Thursday night for the Friday morning metal round.
Get it ready
Empty the drawers and remove the cushions and loose parts before the piece goes out, and keep it out of the recycling bins, which take only plastics numbered 1, 2 and 5 in the commingled stream and paper or cardboard in the Thursday stream. Anything still usable can also go to a charity collection instead of the curb.
Hoboken asks for every item to be placed at the curb after 7:30 p.m., or after 9 p.m. in the Limited Business Area, in a container with a tight fitting lid, and garbage may weigh no more than 50 pounds. The city warns that failing to follow the collection ordinances and the recycling rules can bring a summons, and buildings with more than 50 units also have to comply with the waste containerization ordinance in Chapter 110 of the Municipal Code, with containers approved by the Department of Infrastructure.
Commingled recycling goes out on Monday night and takes plastic, glass, beverage cartons and metal, with only plastics numbered 1, 2 and 5 and nothing bagged, foamed, paper or cardboard. Paper and cardboard go out on Thursday night, flattened and secured, with no plastic bags, Styrofoam, glass or plastics. Everything has to be empty, clean and dry, and the city points residents to the free Recycle Coach tool and the recycling coordinator for anything unclear.
