The local disposal guide
Hoboken collects its own garbage, recycling and bulk material rather than leaving residents to hire a hauler. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Public Works runs the programme, and it works on a fixed weekly rhythm: garbage with non metal furniture and mattresses goes out on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday nights, commingled recycling on Monday nights, and Thursday night is the metal night for metal furniture, appliances, yard waste, electronic waste, paper and cardboard. Everything goes to the curb after 7:30 p.m. in a lidded container, or after 9 p.m. in the Limited Business Area, and garbage may weigh no more than 50 pounds. That schedule is the whole disposal map for a household here: a mattress rides with the garbage, a sofa or a dresser rides with the garbage, a refrigerator, air conditioner or washing machine waits for Thursday, and a television goes out with the electronics on the same metal night. The city does not take construction and demolition debris at all, and paint, varnish, turpentine and pesticides go to the Hudson County Improvement Authority hazardous waste days instead of the curb.

Metal appliances are a Thursday night curbside item, including refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, hot water heaters and air conditioners, with the doors removed before the unit goes out.
Televisions, computers, monitors and cell phones are collected at the curb on Thursday night with the other electronic waste, while small non metal appliances go out with the regular garbage.
The city does not name exercise equipment, so the night depends on what the machine is made of and the household should confirm with the recycling coordinator.
Construction and demolition waste is the one stream Hoboken refuses outright: sheet rock, concrete and treated lumber are not collected at the curb and have to be hauled privately.
Non latex paint, varnish, turpentine and pesticides never go to the curb. They belong to the Hudson County Improvement Authority drop-off days, while latex paint has its own two rules depending on how full the can is.
Yard waste goes out on Thursday night with the metal and electronic waste round and is picked up on Friday morning, with separate piles for leaves, grass, weeds and branches.
The handoff matters
Hoboken asks for every item to be placed at the curb after 7:30 p.m., or after 9 p.m. in the Limited Business Area, in a container with a tight fitting lid, and garbage may weigh no more than 50 pounds. The city warns that failing to follow the collection ordinances and the recycling rules can bring a summons, and buildings with more than 50 units also have to comply with the waste containerization ordinance in Chapter 110 of the Municipal Code, with containers approved by the Department of Infrastructure.

Appliances need their doors removed, electronic waste covers computers, televisions, monitors and cell phones with lithium ion batteries, and yard waste needs separated piles with tied branches, while paper and cardboard have to be dry, flattened and secured.

Paper and cardboard go out on Thursday night, flattened and secured, with no plastic bags, Styrofoam, glass or plastics. Everything has to be empty, clean and dry, and the city points residents to the free Recycle Coach tool and the recycling coordinator for anything unclear.

It depends on the material. Non metal furniture and mattresses go out with the regular garbage on Sunday, Wednesday or Friday nights, and non metal furniture with metal parts, such as an upholstered chair with wood or metal legs or a sofa bed, also goes with the garbage. Metal furniture and appliances go out on Thursday night and are collected on Friday morning before noon.Official guidance
Yes. A non metal couch is collected with the regular garbage on Sunday, Wednesday or Friday nights, and the city specifically allows non metal furniture with metal or wood legs and sofa beds to go out that way as well. A metal framed piece instead waits for the Thursday metal night and the Friday morning pickup, so sort the item before setting it out.Official guidance
Put it out with the regular garbage. The city lists mattresses in the same curbside stream as non metal furniture on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday nights, at no published charge and with no appointment, so a mattress does not need a special collection or a trip to a transfer station.Official guidance
On Thursday night. Metal appliances including refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, hot water heaters, air conditioners and small metal appliances are collected on Friday morning before noon by a separate crew, and all doors must be removed from refrigerators, washers, dryers and stoves. Small non metal appliances such as a coffee maker or blender go with the regular garbage instead.Official guidance
To the curb on Thursday night. The city collects computers, televisions, monitors and cell phones as electronic waste on Thursday for the Friday morning round, and lithium ion batteries go out with them. Small non metal appliances such as vacuums, coffee makers, blenders and food processors are separated out and go with the regular garbage, and alkaline batteries also go with garbage.Official guidance
The recycling coordinator, Dave Calamoneri, at 1501 Madison Street, on (201) 420-2000 extension 1320 or recycling@hobokennj.gov, with counter hours weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Household hazardous waste questions go to the Hudson County Improvement Authority environmental hotline on 201-324-6222 extension 3219.Official guidance
Visit the Municipal Garage and Recycling Drop-Off Center at 1501 Madison Street with proof of residency, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The city provides up to one container for every five units in a building, and the same counter supplies the free paper bags used for grass and leaves on yard waste night.Official guidance
They never go in recycling, and the city states that plainly. Alkaline batteries can be put out with the regular garbage, lithium ion batteries go out with the electronic waste on Thursday night, and compact fluorescent bulbs should be taken to a home improvement retailer while incandescent bulbs and lighting fixtures go with the garbage.Official guidance
Buildings with more than 50 units have to comply with the waste containerization ordinance in Chapter 110 of the Municipal Code, and the Department of Infrastructure reviews the containers each building proposes so that the city and its contract hauler can collect them. Container allocations are also tied to unit counts, with up to one recycling container for every five units, so a building manager should start at the recycling counter on Madison Street.Official guidance
