The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Amherst collects garbage and recyclables once a week, and the town supplies the totes: private or personal containers are not allowed, everything has to be inside the town tote, and the tote goes within five feet of the right-of-way by 7 a.m. on the collection day but not before noon the previous day. Bulky material rides the same weekly stop rather than a booked haul, up to eight items beyond the totes, and that covers furniture, mattresses and box springs at the curb. Yard waste is seasonal instead: from April 1 to November 30 grass, leaves, shrubs and trimmings are collected separately in cans, bushel baskets or paper yard waste bags that weigh no more than sixty pounds, from December 1 to March 31 the same material goes out with the garbage, and fall leaves are picked up by the Highway Department on its own announcement. Metal and appliances are the exception to the curbside rule: white goods and large metal items are collected by the Highway Department by appointment only, twice a month, and electronics are no longer accepted curbside at all, so a television or computer has to go to the Highway Department at 1042 North Forest Road. Construction and demolition material is the property owner's responsibility beyond small cut and bundled pieces, hazardous products such as oil based paint, propane tanks and chemicals never go out with the garbage, and the town publishes its own routes for both.

Weekly garbage and recycling in town totes

Accepted with preparation

Garbage and recyclables are collected weekly, and everything has to be inside the town issued tote because private or personal containers are not allowed.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Town of Amherst households using the town issued garbage and recycling totes. The town does not publish a separate per pickup charge on this page; service questions go to the Office of Refuse Control.
When & how
Put the totes within five feet of the right-of-way by 7 a.m. on the collection day, and not before noon the day before. Empty containers have to be removed on the collection day itself.
Get it ready
Keep all garbage and recyclables inside the town totes so nothing falls out into the neighborhood, and keep private or personal containers off the curb. Because the bulky allowance is separate, any furniture or bedding set out with the totes counts against the weekly item limit rather than fitting around it.

Yard waste, leaves and brush

Accepted with preparation

From April 1 to November 30 yard waste is collected separately from garbage in cans, bushel baskets or paper bags under sixty pounds, and from December 1 to March 31 it goes out with the garbage instead.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Town of Amherst households in the seasonal program, which the Highway Department opens on April 1. The town publishes no per bag charge for curbside yard waste, and the compost facility on Smith Road is open to Amherst residents from April 1 as well.
When & how
From April 1 through November 30 set yard waste out separately on the collection day, using garbage cans with the lids removed, bushel baskets with solid bottoms and two manufactured handles, or two ply paper yard waste bags. From December 1 through March 31 the same material goes out with the garbage, fall leaves are picked up by the Highway Department on its own announcement, and stumps, logs and excessive tree trimmings need a scheduled pickup arranged by telephone in advance.
Get it ready
Keep each container under sixty pounds, and do not use plastic bags or bind debris with plastic or wire, because those loads are not picked up. Cut lumber into four foot lengths and tie it into bundles under sixty pounds with nails removed or bent over, keep railroad ties out of yard waste, garbage and recycling, cut treated wood ties into two foot lengths for the regular garbage, and take brick, stone and concrete to the Highway Department rather than putting them out for collection.

Construction, remodeling and heavy material

Special rules apply

Small amounts of building material can go out cut and bundled, but a major construction or remodeling project has to be handled by a private service, and brick, stone and concrete are the property owner's responsibility.

City cost & eligibility
The town publishes no collection charge for the small bundled allowance and states that major projects are not accepted curbside at all, so confirm the limits and any condition with the Office of Refuse Control before a project load is put out.
When & how

Get it ready
Cut fencing, plasterboard, drywall, paneling, plywood, bookcases and doors into four by four foot sections and stack them neatly, bundle anything smaller to no more than four feet and sixty pounds, keep railroad ties out of every collection stream, and take brick, stone and concrete to the Highway Department at 1042 North Forest Road rather than setting them at the curb.

Paint, chemicals, propane and household hazardous waste

Accepted with preparation

Self haul in Amherst means the Highway Department at 1042 North Forest Road, which is the town's own drop off for the material that no longer goes curbside: electronic devices, including televisions and computers, small manageable metal items up to eight feet, and the brick, stone and concrete that property owners are responsible for. Residents call the department first for instructions and hours, keep tires and propane tanks out of the load because they are refused there and at the curb, and use the appointment route for white goods and large metal, which the department collects twice a month.
