The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Cleveland Heights runs curbside refuse and recycling from its own Department of Public Works, and bulk items follow four citywide routes that rotate one route a week, so a household puts up to four items on the tree lawn on the first day of its area route week rather than on any day it likes. Soft furniture, mattresses and box springs have to be wrapped in plastic, refrigerator doors come off, carpet is cut and rolled, and bags of trash, move-out loads and building debris are refused. Anything beyond four items, a different collection day or a loose brush pickup goes through the Bulk Pickup Request Form for a per item fee paid in advance. Cardboard rides the weekly recycling cart, flattened and never bagged.

Bulk items, furniture and appliances

Accepted with preparation

Bulk pickup runs on four rotating city routes, four items per pickup at no charge, with a paid special pickup for extra items or another day.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Up to four bulk items per pickup are collected at no charge from a Cleveland Heights household on the route week for its area. More than four items, a collection on a day that is not the scheduled route day, or a special collection of loose brush is arranged through the Bulk Pickup Request Form at the published per item rate, paid in advance up to a maximum of ten items.
When & how
Find the area route in the 2026 Refuse and Recycling Calendar and place the items on the tree lawn on the first day of that route week, between 7 p.m. on the Sunday and 7 a.m. on the Monday of the collection week, with the pickup day varying through the week.
Get it ready
Wrap all soft furniture, mattresses and box springs in plastic, remove the doors from refrigerators and appliances and lay the item flat so a child or pet cannot climb inside, cut and roll carpet into rolls no more than one foot high and three feet long, keep everything at least three feet from the refuse and recycling carts and clear of overhead obstructions, flatten and tie large boxes and crates, separate tires from their rims, and put glass and sharp-edged items in puncture-resistant containers before bagging. Do not add bags of trash, and keep move-out, clean-out, building and construction debris out of the pile.

Cardboard and paper

Accepted with preparation

Cardboard goes in the recycling cart on the weekly curbside collection, flattened and never bagged.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Weekly curbside recycling is provided to Cleveland Heights city residents at no separate charge, with cardboard and paper going in the recycling cart.
When & how
Put the recycling cart out on the weekly collection day, with the cardboard flattened and loose in the cart.
Get it ready
Empty and flatten all cardboard and boxes so they take up less space, keep the material clean and dry, and place it loosely in the recycling cart rather than in a bag, because bagged or contaminated recycling is refused. Plastic bags belong at a grocery store rather than in the cart.

Right item.
Right place.

Bulk items go out at the start of the route week

Place bulk items on the tree lawn for collection on the first day of the area route week, between 7 p.m. on the Sunday and 7 a.m. on the Monday, and expect the pickup day to vary through the week. Refuse of any type set out before the regular collection day without an arrangement with Public Works may draw a fine.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Cleveland Heights runs both routes as curbside services, so there is no city drop-off site on the pages that were read. Bulk items go on the tree lawn on the first day of an area route week, with four items per pickup at no charge and the four city routes rotating weekly on a color coded schedule in the 2026 Refuse and Recycling Calendar. More than four items, a different day or a loose brush collection is arranged through the Bulk Pickup Request Form at a per item charge paid in advance, up to ten items, and collections usually run within 24 to 72 hours on a regular collection day with no weekend service. Cardboard and other recyclables go loose in the recycling cart on the weekly collection, empty, clean and dry and never bagged, and plastic bags, batteries, electronics, clothing, food, liquids, yard waste, Styrofoam and scrap metal are refused there. Cuyahoga County runs a recycling and disposal search engine for drop-off and reuse questions that the city points to, and the refuse and recycling supervisor is on 216-691-7300.
