Appliances are named bulk items on the weekly Rumpke route, and the county adds a second path with two free appliance days a year. A unit that never held refrigerant can go out with the cart day, and the county accepts large household appliances free on its amnesty weekends.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Appliances carry no separate per item charge on the Rumpke route, because bulk collection is part of the quarterly contract. Montgomery County also takes large household appliances free twice a year from county residents with proof of residency, and on all other days the county charges its normal disposal fee.

Get it ready
Empty and clean the unit and keep it upright and reachable at the curb. Confirm whether the appliance ever held refrigerant, because a unit with refrigerant cannot ride the Rumpke truck until the refrigerant is removed and a certificate of removal is attached to it.
A refrigerant unit is the one appliance that cannot simply go out. Rumpke requires the refrigerant to be removed by a technician before pickup with a certificate of removal attached to the appliance, and the county removes refrigerant free for county residents up to five appliances a year.

The city publishes no refrigerant removal price, because the work is done by a technician before the unit is eligible for collection and the certificate has to be attached. When & how
Have the refrigerant removed first and the certificate attached, then set the unit beside the cart on the regular service day, or take it to the county transfer and recycling facility during its weekday and Saturday hours. The county appliance amnesty weekend runs Thursday October 1 and Friday October 2, 2026 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday October 3 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Get it ready
Leave the refrigerant sealed until a technician handles it, then keep the certificate with the appliance until it is collected, because an untagged unit will not be serviced. Keep refrigerant units out of the county electronics drop-off, which refuses large appliances, and out of the Yard Debris Center.

Wrap it, tape it, or certify it, or the truck keeps moving
Three preparation rules decide whether a bulk item is actually collected. An upholstered item, including a sofa, a mattress, a box spring or a dining chair, has to be completely wrapped on all sides in sealable plastic, and the city states that anything not completely sealed will not be serviced. Any glass, such as a mirror, a window or a shower door, has to be taped. An appliance that contains refrigerant has to have that refrigerant removed before pickup with a certificate of removal attached to the unit. A toilet has to go out with the tank separated from the bowl, and a large piece such as a dining hutch or a ping-pong table should be separated or dismantled.
It has to fit the Rumpke cart, and the cart has to go behind the house
All material placed out for collection has to fit inside the Rumpke provided carts or be set out as a bulk item, and every service level has to use those carts. Carts come in 95, 65 and 35 gallon sizes, and an additional trash or recycling cart carries its own quarterly charge. Between collections the ordinance requires a cart to be kept in a garage or building if possible, and on the side or at the rear of the property if it is stored outside. Carts may not sit at the curb, on the driveway or sidewalk, or at the front of the property.

The Montgomery County transfer and recycling facility is at 1001 Encrete Lane in Moraine, open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and closed Sunday. Household chemicals are accepted every Tuesday from 1 to 7 p.m. from March through October and on the first Tuesday of the month from 1 to 7 p.m. from November through February, under the green recycling canopy.
